@martinpi.bsky.social & I had the absolute best time at ChinaJoy - just got home last night and we miss China already!
Really on-point article by @gibiz.bsky.social . We've all been saying this for years — often in meetings with platform holders! Over and over! 😔 There ARE answers; but the peeps with the power don't seem to want to do anything. #gamedev #indiegames #gaming www.gamesindustry.biz/the-industry...
The industry makes great games, but nobody can find them
Algorithms built to surface content are increasingly rewarding volume, familiarity, and short-term engagement over quality or originality

Just to be clear on this article, the position I took isn't "developers need to be more brave" but "funding needs to be more brave". Developers make all the cool stuff, just because they want to - the funding side hits it with market research and fear and growth targets and shareholders.
We need games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Balatro, and Peak as a cure for the "fear" in the industry, say experts www.gamesradar.com/games/we-nee...
They are selling Italian brain rot themed ice cream in China now. It’s over
As the only person on this website who liked the design back then I feel vindicated. This car was always for the Chinese market that is way, way ahead of everyone else in terms of EVs.

The success of Emily Wilson's translation had nothing to do with Christopher Nolan. The hardcover edition came out 9 years ago and was a huge success. The paperback has been in steady demand since 2018. My store has sold 75 copies (a lot for 1 book for us) and 66 of those were before January.
Love the bird designs and could only tell 4/6 of the famous faces on the others (2 of the lads are a challenge).
You can see all the new options for the Euro banknote designs here (and you can flip them over too) www.ecb.europa.eu/euro/banknot...
I think the Dragons in Dungeons and Dragons should be spelled Dreagons (like "dread", not like "dream") for consistency.
Now would be a good moment to liberate the birds from the evil storyteller and his minions. (Not that there ever is a moment where that's not the right thing to do).
New demo update alert! This time mostly stability and bug fixing but also the game runs much better on Steam Deck now, fonts are more readable, and loading times have been greatly improved. store.steampowered.com/news/app/347...
Sometimes you add content to a game and sometimes you just make everything run better. This week's demo update is in the latter department. Game feels much more juicy thanks to smoother animations, better loading and caching, and chunkier UI elements.
I wonder if there isn't a bit of a silver lining in the fact that AI always clings to the middle of the road. It will force artists to venture into unknown territories, stake their claim where the domesticated Silicon Valley machines would never dare to go. Not that we needed that kind of pressure.
I feel like a lot of discourse about AI fiction submissions seems to want there to be a perfect way to distinguish AI fiction that never discourages or excludes real writers. And it's like, I don't know what to tell you. That's impossible.
There are some good observations in this blog post. I don't use agentic coding myself so I don't know enough to judge but this critique seems very on point.

This is the near-term future we're facing in games. And it's only going to get easier to roll your own clone. I don't think that acts as competition for eccentric indie game makers like us – we "just" have to go even wilder – but it's going to be a huge challenge for shovelware-producers.
🍹Long weekend Project: Since Claude Fable is banned for Science, I thought it might be fun to see if it can be used for something less scientific. 😎 Introducing Age of Epochs! ⚔️ An attempted reproduction of Age of Empires II in Javascript. ageofepochs.com (1/4)
Am I overly cautious or is this a normal ratio between internal and external builds? I'll push 0.4.66 live on Monday if our testers don't find any red flags over the weekend.
Maybe putting an office software and consulting specialist in charge of video games wasn't a great idea in the first place. I wouldn't trust IBM or KPMG to act as stalwarts of gaming either.
I've watched Tenet on the biggest screen in Scandinavia, mask on, with @alphachar.bsky.social and 3 other people during a short break of the pandemic. We had the best of times because a) we were in the cinema during the end of the world and b) it is a blast of a movie. Temporal pincer manoeuvre!

Those are some interesting results and a part of me thinks it's sad that coding is not regarded as a creative endeavour by players of games.

Simon Carless did a pretty big AI survey of Steam users. Interesting results: newsletter.gamediscover.co/p/what-do-st... In summary: People DO care and you will lose sales if you declare it. People are less bothered about AI for code. To be clear: We do not use it for anything.
The run for the Generative AI Roblox is picking up speed. And just like mobile phone cameras did not replace the visual arts, this will become a distinct medium to video games, if anything. It is still competing for the same resource, of course – attention and time. techcrunch.com/2026/07/02/m...

I think a lot of what we're seeing in the moment in the games industry, but also outside it, is a move away from packaged products. This development is not new but it's gaining speed. Generative AI is, among other things, a continuation of that trend.
