Is everyone aware of the General Motors streetcar conspiracy? In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.

All this is super duper extra weird because all of these people are very comfortable with the idea that there is no single universal definition of “species,” that in fact there are hundreds and which is most relevant is highly study-dependent
Ben Allen@evodynamics.bsky.social · 4w agoDefining sex based on gamete size is a choice. Perhaps it's the most parsimonious of all binary single-criterion sex definitions. But to claim that gamete size is the "ultimate defining criterion of biological sex" (whatever that means) falls into the naturalistic fallacy the authors warn of.
I don't see why people think this saves time. Checking and redoing it is like having to do everything twice.
