This is in part - but not completely - a neutral citation problem. When we cite, we should disclose what we cite something for and what that citation means in our text. Most citations nowadays are 'neutral' in the sense of lacking these narrative indicators. 1/

Unfortunately our citation practices fail to properly distinguish between original research offering theoretical/empirical evidence from something someone said in an academic looking piece. It's a reification mechanism we perpetuate via our every day research practices.

Reviewer invite frequency always rises just before summer, when people submit their work and then retire for a much-needed summer break. However, this year it seems excessive. I'm getting on average about 2/day since the beginning of July.
