Fear, Loss, and Hope Amid Israel's War on South Lebanon

Despite the fear of a sustained occupation, residents of southern Lebanon remain steadfast in their hope for an end to the onslaught.

Lebanon signed away its right to pursue legal action against Israel for its war crimes in southern Lebanon. Lebanon's deputy prime minister now says individual Lebanese citizens still have the right to bring cases against Israel before European courts. What a pathetic and weak government.

Lebanon outlines legal path to prosecute Israeli war crimes

As Israeli strikes and home demolitions continue in southern Lebanon, a government official outlined the country’s options for legally pursuing Israel.

I spoke to the Australian program Global Roaming about Sudan. I highlighted the RSF;s atrocities, the need to see this war as a counter-revolution directed at grassroots politics and how both sides - and their backers - enable one another in many ways. www.abc.net.au/listen/progr...

Who profits from Sudan's 'endless' civil war? - ABC listen

It's the biggest humanitarian disaster in the world right now, yet few outside the conflict are aware of it. But Sudan's brutal civil war, which has displaced millions and turned cities like El Fasher...

“Some 250,000 people were still in el-Fasher when the city fell. Of that number, at least 60,000 people remain unaccounted for, according to the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab, which uses satellite imagery to assess conflict dynamics in Sudan.” ✍️ @matnashed.bsky.social

The International Criminal Court is building a case against fighters from Sudan's feared Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for committing atrocity crimes in the vast western region of Darfur:

We can lament the collapse of the multilateral system, or we can be realistic and act knowing that bilateral, state-state processes have been the order of the day across the globe since Astana, if not before. That requires acknowledgment on all sides that a military solution in Sudan is impossible

What is happening in Darfur is utterly devastating, made more painful by how we all saw it coming. You can’t really say you didn’t know, but if you didn’t, read this: An atrocity foretold: How the RSF siege of El Fasher turned into genocidal slaughter www.thenewhumanitarian.org/analysis/202...

An atrocity foretold: How the RSF siege of El Fasher turned into genocidal slaughter

Communication networks are down but a deluge of shocking videos point to mass killings on a devastating scale.

I woke up this morning to a BBC report about a deadly Israeli air strike against a water station in Gaza, where mostly women and children lined up for H2O. reut.rs/3UfTxSZ

Gaza truce talks faltering over withdrawal; 17 reported killed in latest shooting near aid

Witnesses described people being shot in the head and torso.

As both a journalist and professor of journalism, columnist @hofrench.bsky.social writes that he has been troubled by the Western press’s inconsistent and often paltry focus on the astounding devastation in Gaza.

Let me know the last time Israel ever respected a ceasefire: Not in Gaza, not in Lebanon and I strongly doubt it will do so in Iran. More and more people in this region ask the simple question: How are we supposed to live under the domination of this colonial and imperial state. Who can blame them

All of this. All of this death, destruction and damage because no one will force Israel to stop. All of this just so Netanyahu can hold on to power until he dies. How cheap the world views life in our region. Even after Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Palestine…there is no end to the cruelty.

The hell with mainstream analysts who stupidly argued Hamas was the "genocidal" actor in order to deflect from Israel's explicit and stated intentions to commit genocide in #Gaza since the start of the war. We still have people who want to be taken serious yelling, "But, Hamas."

Sudan is in the early morning of May 6, and another drone strike has been reported, making it the 3rd day of attacks. Reportedly, 4 targets hit so far: the airport, a fuel depot, warehouse & a naval base. Port Sudan is the wartime capital & supposedly safe. But nowhere is safe. #KeepEyesOnSudan

Today's quick update [May 5]: - RSF drone strikes on Port Sudan for the second consecutive day, targeting strategic fuel depot. - RSF attack on Elfashir, North Darfur repelled by SAF. #KeepEyesOnSudan

Israel has used human rights jargon and terms from IHL to provide a veneer of legality for its genocide in #Gaza. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces are now adopting the same practice to perpetrate atrocities in #Sudan. My in-depth story for AJE. www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/5/...

How RSF is adopting Israel’s ‘template for genocide’ in Sudan

For years, Israel has used human rights terminology to whitewash killing civilians, now the RSF is doing the same.

There's something to be said about the UAE increasingly behaving like- and aspiring to the level of impunity enjoyed by Israel. "The RSF has also mimicked the Israeli tactic of carrying out mass expulsions under a humanitarian guise." - @matnashed.bsky.social

"Entire cities and states have been decimated, pushing more than 12 million people to flee their homes. And yet, there has been limited media coverage of Sudan’s war - the experiences of Sudanese people have been neglected." #KeepEyesOnSudan

🇸🇩 "Some evenings, we would roam out in the valley. Nyala is beautiful, stunning scenery. Other days were for socialising with our neighbours, days and nights full of dallouka music, and jabana coffee sessions with the other women. Life was so nice before the war." #Sudan

For decades, Israel waged a war on international humanitarian law by trying to create quasi-legal concepts to commit atrocities with impunity. Now, Israel and its western allies risk destroying what's left of the human rights legal order. My latest for AJE. www.aljazeera.com/features/202...

‘Weakens cyberdefenses’ and ‘rising danger’ are not ‘neutral’ terms. So, the NYT, like the others, is fine with taking a stand when they want to. This is not a matter of journalistic ethics. It’s a matter of editorial policy.
