I write Extra Points, a newsletter about off-the-field stories in college sports. I also (badly) make computer games, woodworking projects, and jokes. Chicago.
Okay this is a rare PR announcement that I'm suddenly very interested in. UTRGV has their own new gatorade like this...which other schools used to do? I want to know everything about the Rutgers knockoff Gatorade
@spacedragon.bsky.social this might be a bit random, but are any of the meetups/activities in your ChicagoAnime group okay for kids? This world isn't really my scene, but my 12-year old has gotten REALLY into anime/manga, and I'd love to be a Cool Dad and help connect with her on this stuff
if this is the pipeline to senior college administration, I'm going to be a conference commissioner in four years lol
OU AD Roger Denny - Stone Age @mattbrown.bsky.social ? from SoonerScoop dot com, which is not on bluesky.
The only instagram account I care about now the Mississippi State Extension School Bug Guy.
lmao so I apparently have a torn ligament, which is why I can barely walk, but my insurance does not cover a single orthopedic specialist within 100 miles! Boy I love the United States of America's health system!
Is it bad if you wake up and your knee is so sore and stiff that you can’t bend it or walk and all the physical therapy places are booked for a few days? Asking for somebody who isn’t me Guess I don’t have to do yard work at least
Currently experiencing levels of “who among us” I didn’t know were medically possible
in insane local news, the 26 year old director of a rocky horror production was arrested for sending threatening messages to himself in order to get the play shut down bc he didn’t want to deal with cast drama www.mynbc5.com/article/rock...
if you care about Michigan athletics, sports biz OR are just a big ol' nerd, I think you'd enjoy this newsletter. and if you'd want me to do these for other schools, I'm all ears!
good morning we crunched all the numbers for michigan athletics (and could do the same for your favorite team) (link below to our MICHIGAN ATHLETICS SPECIAL REPORT) www.extrapointsmb.com/p/special-re...
welp, good thing we moved all of our stuff out of AirTable a few months ago. That sucks.
Airtable was just acquired by Bending Spoons. Goodbye to Airtable. If your business runs on Airtable or worse, if your business IS Airtable, you need to make an exit plan. I wrote about what this means for small business owners. www.revenuerulebreaker.com/airtable-was...
Catching up on some college jersey sponsorship news that dropped while I was out...I believe UTSA is the first school to secure a patch sponsor for their cheerleading uniforms? (and a lot of free food) goutsa.com/news/2026/01...

writing a lot about michigan athletics for tomorrow's extra points like, a LOT a lot. and not even about scandals!
A research question I'm kicking at that perhaps folks smarter than I may have already started. we know that university budgets are much, much larger than athletic department budgets. What kind of schools have reported athletic revenue being the largest percentage of total university revenue?
where *I* live, schools functionally do not sponsor organized sports until 8th grade. If you want something beyond YMCA-intramurals, you gotta drive to a different neighborhood. Like every other map in Chicago, there are coverage gaps when you leave the lake
wait, what's the deal with women's sports in chicago?
I dont think Marisa is wrong here, but its also weird to watch some of this obsession while living in a place that does NOT have anything close to an amateur sport ecosystem for women. Like, my kids couldn't do sports even if they wanted to for *years*, which makes this debate feel even more insane?
the obsession with trans women in sports is, apart from the abject bigotry, a symptom of how we take amateur sports participation way too seriously in this country.
That’s right, news media help desk
It started on Substack. Now, @mattbrown.bsky.social's Extra Points is a niche digital publication that focuses on the economics of college sports. Getting here required switching to a platform that could grow and develop audience, while cutting costs. For Extra Points, Beehiiv was the right move.
In another subscriber-turned-contributor collab, I wrote about Northwestern’s paradigm-smashing new Ryan Field for @mattbrown.bsky.social and Extra Points. What does $875 million get you these days, anyway? www.extrapointsmb.com/p/a-tour-of-...
A tour of Northwestern’s NFL-meets-MLB-meets-MLS college football stadium
The school made an $875 million bet that a different type of fan experience will pay off.

His tone today is very different, which begs the question....how the hell do you give this answer now and say "I dont know" a few days ago?!?
Should the congressman who is credibly accused of beating and throwing scalding water at your own daughter run for re-election? “I don’t know,” says GOP Senator Bernie Moreno www.notus.org/ohio/bernie-...
I haven't seen those specifically (good reminder for when I'm uh, safe to FOIA) but I remember seeing a few others from around 2023 where the payout was medium six figures for the host school.
Oh wait I actually have an interesting one…the Argentina friendlies at Auburn and A&M. Have you been able to FOIA those game contracts and if so (or if not) does that markedly help the Athletic Departments from either school?
league was totally blindsided by recent defections and would be willing to try something out of the box (pro/reg, expand beyond footprint, etc) for the right school. League would like to be a little bigger.
Gimme some Big West goss
I mean, shoot, there aren't THAT many American Mormons, and the Brown family is about as OG Mormon as it gets. Maybe I really AM related to Mitt somehow if he's the kind of mormon I think he is, he should have some leather-bound genological charts in his basement that could clear this up
So you're one of Mitt's cousins.
Maybe, but Argentina is my Michigan, not Mexico, even if that's wrong. And Mexico is the only other country that I'm aware of that I have a connection to, so making them team #3 seems okay? OR PERCHANCE I AM A BAD SOCCER FAN (i am)
Doesn't picking Mexico kind of feel like rooting for Michigan if Ohio State failed to make the CFP?
ZIRP-era digital media is the reason I am a working sportswriter and small business owner, instead of giving up on writing to get an MBA and a steady, boring job with health insurance

not the most fancy new remake, but one of the Ps5 remakes. So the graphics and controls are still dated and all.
Which version of MGS3 did you play?
