A lot of objections to El-Sayed seem to be people saying one of two things, either: “I’m afraid that a Muslim can’t win the general election,” or “I don’t want a Muslim to win the general election.” If it’s the first, you have 3 months to prove that fear wrong. If it’s the second, fix your heart.

El-Sayed: "My commitment to Jewish safety is the same commitment that I have to the safety of my own daughters. Because if there is one question of political philosophy that ought to animate us all, it's what would we do if we treated all our kids like they were all of our kids?"
Now that the Michigan races have been called, we should take a moment to remember not to read too much into early fragmentary reports of results. That applies to me too--I celebrated that Donavan McKinney was up by 32 points. But that was with only 2% of the vote in. Counting takes time.
Look, when the votes from Marquette County get counted, you might call ME the next Senator from Michigan. (Admittedly, it’s unlikely, since I'm not running...but the world can be a weird place!)
Making that to-do list took long enough that at the end, I added "Make to-do list" so that I could check it off.
I'm struck by the way that social work organizations, which love to point to high-profile social workers, rarely "claim" Michael Schwerner. He was an MSW student for a year, but grew frustrated at the program's neglect of root causes of poverty. Then he gave his life addressing those root causes.

These are policymakers, and this is a policy stance. An objectively pro-abuse policy stance.

Stumbled on a post that started "My most unpopular opinion is," followed by a long thread offering a sorta contrarian take on something adjacent to the news. Almost got sucked into replying before realizing that it was engagement-farming. And really, who has time for that?
Great article. In 2021, I was hospitalized with idiopathic pericarditis (which IS an inflammation). More than one Facebook friend prodded me about whether I ate “inflammatory” foods. It was unhelpful, to put it mildly. I imagine the number would be much higher today thanks to MAGA grift.
Inflammatory disorders can be brutal. I’d know personally (thanks vasculitis et al). But the misinformation, including on vaccines, is dangerous. A deep dive from me into how MAHA sped up the inflammation panic. New from me at @motherjones.com www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
I’m older than I was a couple of days ago. I suppose that’s always true, but this is one of those times when there’s a new number to go with it.
It's especially galling that Haley Stevens is portraying herself as the great protector of the Jews in her campaign against a Muslim candidate, given that in 2022 she beat a wonderful Jewish Congressman in a costly primary in part by accusing him of being insufficiently pro-Israel.
She knows she’s losing so she said let’s just go mask off.
Looking for vegan soul food recs on the far South Side of Chicago. Any one have suggestions? @sorenspicknall.bsky.social maybe?
Covid killed over 1.2 million people in the US in its first few years and sickened far more. It's still circulating. Tony Fauci--and so many of other public health workers--avoided untold death and illness through mitigation and vaccination. These are established facts, whatever GOP Senators say.
So in the absence of much communication from the FDA or CDC, is there guidance around lettuce at this point? Do epidemiologists have any sense of whether the recalls have been effective, and what the risk of cyclospora is now?
GOP Senator: Dr. Fauci, you prioritized factual evidence and the results of scientifically robust, peer-reviewed public health research, rather than this made up, frequently debunked conspiracy theory I like, didn't you? Fauci: Uh... GOP Senator: Aha, he admits it!
Staff cuts. Eligibility and processing changes. The immigration crackdown. ASA member Matthew Borus @matthewborus.bsky.social and coauthors detail how getting disability benefits has become harder, real consequences, and ways to improve the process. @us.theconversation.com
Getting disability benefits got harder after the Social Security Administration’s staff was slashed and program rules were changed by Trump
Researchers learned from dozens of interviews that the usual ways of resolving complex cases, escalating issues and holding the authorities accountable no longer work.

This is why they’re going after Dr Fauci: he impeded grifters
Peter Navarro: "I had a million doses of hydroxychloroquine in warehouses as the defense policy coordinator that I was trying to distribute to hospitals. And Fauci got the FDA stop me from doing that."
If you like a post of mine and it disappears, it is almost certainly because I had an error in the original. Sorry!
One of my co-authors pointed out that some of the accounts in this article are almost word-for-word what we heard about the Social Security Administration. And that’s no surprise. Not only have SSA and the IRS both faced the same Trump/Vought playbook, they both have Frank Bisignano at the helm.

People getting mad at Emily Wilson reflects many things (with gender high on the list). There also seems to be this tendency to approach a public discussion as a zero-sum battle between teams. But you don't have to be Team Wilson or Team Nolan. You can enjoy a movie and critique it. Wilson did!
I’ve been uncomfortable with medical staff using AI “note taking” for multiple reasons, and this is definitely one of them.
NEW: A large trove of Claude-generated documents have been exposed to the web and indexed by Google. We reviewed what appear to be real medical records, the full names and phone numbers of school-aged children, and company documents marked for internal use only. futurism.com/artificial-i...
So, what happens if I'm a parent and I know that my kid needs highly paid teachers, a library full of books with diverse characters, trans-inclusive bathrooms and extracurriculars, and a curriculum unpacking topics like systemic racism, colonial oppression, economic inequality, and climate change?

From yesterday and today: it certainly appears ICE in Chicago are wearing the Meta AI Ray-Ban glasses.
Haley Stevens: My critics are antisemites for criticizing Israel. Also Haley Stevens: The (((coastal elites))) are against me, and they are your enemy too, people of Michigan!
"Cool kids on the Internet. They're doing the cool kid chatter. Some of 'em might be the coastal elites, making fun of how I talk. But let's be real. They're making fun of Michigan. They're thinking they're better than us. Their jokes, their criticism, only make me fight harder." -- Haley Stevens
“Coastal elites” is an antisemitic dog whistle. I’m sure some people are already reciting in their heads how that’s not true. And I will concede that it’s not ONLY that. But it absolutely means, in part, “those New York Jews.” Us cosmopolitan types who are thought to look down on the volk.
If someone is a finalist for a job as a professor, they’ve come for a campus visit that’s at least a day long, with meetings and at least one presentation. And I can say from frustrating experience that not all schools send a finalist an email.
I don't expect a rejection email for every application I send. But ffs if we meet, you owe it to me to say I'm not getting the job.
