Our Planning and Infrastructure Act judicial review reforms are bearing fruit. Last month, a challenge against the Stonestreet Green Solar DCO was dismissed by the High Court as ‘totally without merit’ saving months of needless delay on a project that will power c.42,000 homes.

I appreciate that many people will understandably be frightened by what they are seeing at the Unite the Kingdom demonstration today. The right to protest is fundamental. But it can’t be a cover for inciting hatred. We must stand against attempts to inflame and divide us.

We have just introduced our Social Housing Bill to Parliament. At its heart are comprehensive reforms to the Right to Buy including exempting newly built social housing for 35 years. The Bill also increases protections for social tenants who are victims of domestic abuse.

This Labour government is tackling the housing crisis. Our Social Housing Bill will protect precious social housing stock and incentivise the building of new social homes. Our Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill marks the beginning of the end for the feudal leasehold system.

After last week’s election results, business as usual isn’t an option. If we don’t change, we will not be able to deliver on our promise to renew and rebuild our country. But recklessly triggering a formal challenge against the Prime Minister risks a descent into chaos.

We’ve lost exceptional councillors today and I want to thank them for their service. As Keir has acknowledged, the results have been tough. The electorate have sent us a clear message. We need to reflect, rally and show that we can change to renew the country as we promised.
