We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join a newly funded project on “Coupling in situ high-frequency soil moisture data and remote sensing products to bridge spatio-temporal gaps explaining forest health, evapotranspiration, and water availability dynamics across forest biomes”.

Fully Funded PhD Position in Forest Ecohydrology and Machine Learning

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join a newly funded project on "Coupling in situ high-frequency soil moisture data and remote sensing products to bridge spatio-temporal gaps explaining forest health, evapotranspiration, and water availability dynamics across forest biomes". The student will join Dr. Matthias Sprenger’s Watershed Hydrology Lab and work closely with Dr. Katie Martin (Watershed Ecology Lab) and Dr. Mirela Tulbure (Geospatial Analysis for Environmental Change Lab). The successful candidate will enroll in the graduate program at the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University. This project advances the fields of forest ecohydrology by bridging the gap between in-situ observations and global satellite data using machine learning approaches. 
Required qualifications: M.Sc. with a strong academic background in Critical Zone or environmental science, hydrology, forestry, natural resources, soil science, or similar. Proficiency in one programming language (python or R). Evidence of self-motivation, independence, and interest in research. Strong written and oral communication skills.
Desired qualification: Experience with scientific writing, knowledge of statistical analysis and machine learning models, GIS skills.
Benefits: Tuition and student health insurance, $30,000 annual stipend.
Desired start date: July 2026
