Seattle's critical comprehensive plan, a process that so far has taken 5 years, cost millions of dollars, hinges on whether every single person who has a spare $120 to file an appeal is satisfied that every potential, even marginal, impact is fully studied. The EIS was 3047 pages, but not adequate.

Seattleites looking to revive Design Review, if you think it will make buildings better than the ones we’re building, just know all the building you hate went thru Design Review. It made them worse and more expensive. Design Review is 100s of arbitrary guidelines that add up to BLAH buildings.

Lin is a leader and understands the stakes. I wholly support his effort to focus SEPA on real issues, rather than being a capricious cudgel deployed cynically by individuals looking to penalize new housing.

CM Eddie Lin responds to the attacks in the Seattle Times on the idea of SEPA reform in an op-ed this morning. "Dense housing, walkable neighborhoods, and safe, accessible transit is how we can finally address our affordability crisis and build a more resilient and equitable city."

BREAKING: the clock struck midnight and our bipartisan housing bill is now law. Trump refused to sign it, but he couldn't stop it. This law is GROUNDBREAKING. It will build more housing, bring down costs, and for the first time, stop private equity from buying up homes.

while the corridors and centers part of the comp plan is tabled, this is a perfect time to consider what is the character of the corridors, but also the adjacent streets. How do we maximize housing, add tree canopy/open space, repurpose the right of way to be safer, friendlier, and healthier.

People always want to blame "developers" for the ugly, generic buildings that get built in cities these days, but the fact is, they are basically mandated by law & regulation. Just wild the way cities punch themselves in the face.

The lens through which housing needs to be looked at is : HOUSING IS BROKEN. It isn’t one thing, or a handful of things we could fix, it is everything. Codes, fees, financing, zoning, taxes, appraisals… Any project that makes it through construction is a miracle, and probably still doomed.

BREAKING: A deal that would have given housing developers a partial holiday on mandatory affordable housing fees has fallen through. The agreement, brokered between private-market developers, affordable housing developers, and the mayor's office, was supposed to culminate in legislation on Monday.

I thought five years on the Seattle Planning Commission would be enough to see the comp plan through, but it has stretched well beyond my two terms. Welcome, new commissioners!
