A typically sagacious thread from the good doctor, and I would add to this point that one of the reasons I so strongly advocate UK alignment with the EU on goods regulation except if there is a good reason why not is to reduce the burden on the state from an otherwise enormous job.

Putin can be pushed to doing something rash, but only by a direct, existential threat to his regime. Nothing that occurs in Ukraine or near it rises to that level. War induced economic and social discontent in Russia's provinces is likely a bigger threat to Putin than the Ukrainian military.
