When people say it's pointless to try to forecast war, I like to tell them about P.H. Colomb's "The Great War of 189-" (1892) that described how an assassination attempt directed at a "Prince Ferdinand" in the Balkans triggered a wide European war through the mechanisms of alliances.

I was sad to hear of the passing of Pete Duncan, an expert in Russian foreign policy and politics. I met and spoke to him on a few occasions as I was embarking on my PhD and was struck by his kindness and cheerfulness and how generously and attentively he spoke to me about my research ideas.
