So proud of Margaret @mdedloff.bsky.social for a fantastic thesis defense! She used new microscopy and flow cytometry methods to show how IFN-L signaling in maternal immune cells protects against congenital ZIKV infection (this was so many timed pregnancy experiments!) Congratulations Dr. Dedloff!

On the left, proud PI Helen Lazear stands next to the new Dr. Dedloff.

On the right, Margaret stands on a stage next to the screen displaying the title of her thesis, "Viral congenital infections and a protective role for interferon lambda at the maternal-fetal interface". The slide includes an H&E image of a gravid mouse uterus containing 3 fetuses with their associated placentas. Margaret is smiling and happy because this public defense is a celebration of all of her hard work and accomplishments as a graduate student. At her defense, Margaret also shared new work with rubella virus...stay tuned for more!

US science is under assault like never before, but in response the scientific community can build an alliance for independent science--that can fill gaps left by the decimation of Federal science and reimagine the role of science in policy and society. 🧵 blog.ucs.org/genna-reed/u...

Science Under Threat in the United States: Feeling abandoned but energized

Many individual researchers are frustrated by the response - or the lack of a response - from universities to a growing crisis.

The Stonewall Inn released a response to the National Parks Service removing the word transgender from the park outside of the Inn. A great reminder that we have to look after each other

The Stonewall Inn and The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative are outraged and appalled by the recent removal of the word 'transgender' from the Stonewall National Monument page on the National Park Service website. This blatant act of erasure not only distorts the truth of our history, but it also dishonors the immense contributions of transgender individuals - especially transgender women of color - who were at the forefront of the Stonewall Riots and the broader fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

Hey science friends? I know that many of you are concerned about the perceived neutral and apolitical role of science in decisionmaking. But scientists are being targeted. We didn't start it. And advocating *for the role of scientific evidence in policymaking* is not unprofessional advocacy.

If you’re at the Positive Strand RNA Viruses Keystone Symposia, come visit my poster (number 1037) tonight! I’m super excited to be presenting some new microscopy data that’s been in the works for several years now 😎🔬🦠
