Nine newspapers to cut 30 roles in further redundancies Staff numbers at the Sydney Morning Herald and the Age will be cut by 30 in another round of redundancies announced by Nine’s publishing arm today. The managing director of publishing, Tory Maguire, called staff to a town hall meeting at 10.30am on Tuesday to unveil what she said was structural change in a digital-first era. Maguire said in an email seen by Guardian Australia: "The best way to protect our quality journalism is to ensure our organisation adapts to a changing media landscape, that we’re growing commercially and investing in new areas which connect with new audiences. In particular we need to keep shifting towards the digital-first future." Earlier this year Nine made a number of roles in its broadcasting division redundant. This new round of redundancies will not affect the Australian Financial Review.

Regular AJN contributor and lawyer Nomi Kaltmann had a piece commissioned by the newspaper’s editor-in-chief , Gareth Narunsky, which said that watching Schwartz’s testimony at the royal commission was “extremely upsetting” despite their obvious political differences.
