There is a near parallel to this in Anne Rice’s novels (and now the INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE tv show) - Louis, Lestat, Armand, and Nicky are ALL frustrated artists who yearn to make something beautiful and find they are (or are now?) frustrated, appreciative hacks
