These two pictures ended up together in my photo library, one the iconic shot of William Holden floating in a swimming pool in Sunset Boulevard, the other of David Bowie seeming to float in space from the “You’re Not Alone” show at the Lightroom in London. Bowie would’ve appreciated the serendipity

Despite the number of aches and pains that have come to characterize my everyday existence, I am still having a hard time accepting the reality that I am now eligible for many senior discounts.

One of the striking things seeing the Melisende Psalter in person is how much the gold letters glitter. This is a page from a litany -- a long list of saints' names. Some names are written in gold, so when read the page, those names sparkle. In the high-res PDF, they are all a dull brown.

So I spent the afternoon with British Library Manuscript Egerton 1139, a.k.a., the Melisende Psalter. I have thoughts. Mainly, I wish I had a week with it.

Christ Harrowing Hell, puling the unredeemed but virtuous into Heaven. Byzantine-style image.
