If you're scared about being the only person wearing a mask, I can tell you that most people do not care. I've been masking for the past 6 years. I've travelled to several different countries in that time. I've never had Covid and I've endured a handful of snarky comments at most. Be brave.
Ward Q. Normal (he/him)@wardqnormal.bsky.social · 3d agoIf you haven't been masking, give it a try. What do you have to lose? Just wear one in crowds and on planes, trains, and buses. Find a style that fits, so you don't futz with it. You don't have to get sick all the time.

this is absolutely the case. it’s all i hear—& don’t hear—when i hand out free masks at these tables, from my bag at events, or frankly just wearing a mask in public; the trauma simmers in pointed stares & silences until someone, something (my mask) gives permission for it to come out.

It was just like somebody flipped a switch one day and was like alright back to normal but things aren't normal and every new hardship no matter how minor is still adding weight to a heavy load
i've talked about this before in so many ways because it comes up constantly in my daily life; when you are a silence breaker—even in a silent way, by just wearing a mask—folks feel they're given permission to break theirs. the acting as-if, the pretending, is a weight many feel they carry alone.

sure do love having to essentially be stuck not being in society now bc this was the outcome, as someone immunocompromised who has shit lungs to begin with. still wear an n95 if I leave the house. it's obvious downplayers won when even the onc/hemo center I go to has no staff wearing masks.

the way masks are forgotten, eschewed, if not outright derided is imo bc of this same silence, denial. it shouldnt be taboo to acknowledge the harm SARS2 caused, but doing so means acknowledging the ways it continues today, which would mean acknowledging YOU are implicated in changing how things are
