Labour Member of Parliament for Cowdenbeath & Kirkcaldy. UK Government Minister for Scotland.

In June I met the Charity Commission Chief Exec to discuss my research and complaint into UK ‘charities’ donating millions to illegal Israeli settlements. Govt was clear that this should not be happening. The Commission told me new guidance (rules) will be put in place to stop it.

I’m honoured to be asked by the Prime Minister to serve as a Minister in the Scotland Office. Our new Government is committed to bringing positive change for the people of Scotland. I’m looking forward to helping make that happen, and to getting started today.

Last week I was proud to lead the first UK Parliamentary delegation to Syria since the fall of the Assad regime. We saw some of the destruction left in the suburbs of Damascus by Assad, Putin and their allies. We got a glimpse of the vast recovery effort now underway in Syria.

All morning I’ve thought of Jo & how much we miss her. She was good for us. Jo’s belief in the goodness of humanity shone out of her. It sparkled & called on us all to do better. Those of us who were lucky enough to be Jo’s friends must redouble our work to carry her light forwards ❤️

I spoke to BBC Radio 4 about some of the ways UK charities are funnelling money to illegal Israeli settlements - and getting taxpayer subsidies for doing so. This must end now; the Charity Commission have to act.

1/4 Incredibly important by @melanie_ward showing over recent years 32 UK registered charities have sent £28 million to illegal West Bank settlements. Yesterday the UK gov said it would meet with the Charity Commission to discuss. But this should be just the beginning. bsky.app/profile/mela...

Funding illegal Israeli settlements is not charitable activity. It is extremist activity. Working with Israeli human researchers, I found at least 32 UK charities who have sent £28 million to settlements in recent years. There’s a likely taxpayer subsidy of at least £5 million through Gift Aid.

Together with almost 140 fellow Labour MPs, I have written to the Foreign Secretary to call for a ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements. Our group includes every Labour select committee chair. It’s time to be clear that settlements have no viable economic future (1/2)

I recently visited #NATO HQ with the brilliant Munich Security Conference programme I’m on. We met the Deputy Sec Gen amongst others and talked about vital support for Ukraine, the threat from Russia, and the essential defence partnership we have with NATO allies to keep our country safe.

I feel sick watching the debate on the Assisted Dying Bill in the Scottish Parliament. My brother has complex disabilities. As so many disabled people and disability organisations have said, this bill would put him and them at risk. I hope so deeply that MSPs reject it.

It is not possible to give the choice that a small number seek about the end of their life without putting a much larger vulnerable group in harm’s way. The Royal College of Psychiatrists & many others agree. That’s why I hope MSP colleagues will reject the dangerous assisted dying bill tomorrow
