Today marks four years since the Supreme Court ended the constitutional right to abortion. Now, reproductive freedoms are under sustained attack across the country, regularly endangering the lives of those in need of care. We must protect reproductive health care at all costs.

As of today (6/17), 28,000+ peeps have commented on the proposed OMB Regulation. YAY! But also… it’s a teeny tiny fraction of the people whose jobs and lives will be made more difficult/impossible by this proposed Regulation. Not just scientists! ( 🧵 1/n)...

I just submitted my comments to the docket on the Proposed OMB Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance (OMB-2026-0034). Have you submitted yours? Do it soon! For a useful guide, see www.standupforscience.foundation/policy-and-a...

NEW: A serious staffing shortage — of the Trump admin's own making — is delaying the agency's ability to send billions to universities around the country, leaving labs reeling in the meantime. “I thought we were at rock bottom”, a senior NIH official said. “We are below rock bottom now.”

NIH staffing shortage could slash number of new grants issued this year

Some units at the US funding giant are so understaffed, they are focusing on mandated grant renewals rather than new awards.

Please stop saying the bill allows "no more multi-year funding" - or at least be clear the 'more' is in reference to disastrous FY25 levels. The bill allows 39% MYF, same as in FY25, which contributed substantially to a 24% drop in new research. The bill has some wins. MYF is not one of them.

Both chambers of Congress have now passed the FY26 minibus with NIH provisions. The President will sign. (1) $48.7 billion for NIH (2) Full IDC recovery (3) No more multi-year funding (4) No NIH reorganization, maintaining the current IC structure.

Agree, NIH staff saved the day. Despite their heroic effort, the bad multiyear funding (MYF) policy from Vought's OMB means fewer grants, fewer cures, & research workforce brain drain. Any NIH appropriations bill must include language that limits the use of MYF in FY2026 - or this trend continues.

@aatishb.bsky.social got me on the record. “My colleagues did an outstanding job to work their butts off to approve things.” I swear it's true. It's still true at #NIH.
