Did you guys know when it comes to two characters I happen to ship them? A lot? Just saying. On a completely unrelated note I am excited for Evercold and possibilities.
@tada-neko-san.bsky.social one theory I have seen floated is that it wasn't exactly Ysayle who died but it was Shiva. So what that means for Ysayle the human is still impossible to know.
How are Square Enix going to drop THIS and still not update Ysayle's model?!
Ysayle's death by contrast just sucks. The plot decided that all she feels is sorrow and regret, and it's almost portrayed as if she just fully commits suicide in a vaguely useful way. Because the writers couldn't see the myriad more interesting things to do with her story instead.
We don't see her again at all until the end, where the story fully pulls a Garlean flying fortress out of its ass, so she can show up to do a heroic sacrifice against an antagonist who, up until now, has had zero thematic resonance with the ongoing plot whatsoever. I hate this.
Where does she go next now that both sides of the conflict have been proven false, and the war is over? The game asks none of these questions, and fully runs out of things for her to do halfway through. She tells her fellow heretics to stand down and leaves Ishgard with them.
-and who chose to take up arms alongside the dragons. This is compelling stuff. There is so much they could have done with that. Ysayle is a genuinely good and compassionate person, whose idealism led her to do some terrible things. How does she square with this guilt? How does she redeem herself?
The worst offender is what the writing did with Ysayle. She was set up to be the most interesting character in the expansion by far, potentially the game as a whole. The leader of a faction of Ishgardians who saw through the lies of their church long before any of the 'real' main characters do-

and on top of that, while the game treats Haurchefant's death like the most important moment in the expansion, Ysayle basically gets a few lines about how it's sad she died and then everyone moves on like it was nbd, even though Ysayle is arguably way more important to the story than Haurchefant!!!
