This is the happiest day of my life! I can't express my joy at discovering that the people I look up to the most have decided that I am worth investing more time & energy into. That they could see value in me one day being a colleague. @metarolism.bsky.social #Purdue #PhDStudent #SoilMicrobiology

Screenshot of a letter from Purdue University, office of the vice provost for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. It says Aprils 24, 2026. Dear Francis, Congratulations! This letter serves as your official notification of admission to graduate studies at the Purdue University West Lafayette campus. I am delighted to welcome you to a community of more than 13,000 graduate students on our three campuses who come to us from every state in the Union and from 108 countries.

New bioRxiv preprint 🚀 Introducing SIPdb: a 16S rRNA gene database of stable isotope probing studies + incorporator annotations + pipeline + interactive dashboard. Built for SIPsters, but designed to add info to any microbiome dataset via sequence-based inference. Take a look! bit.ly/4rMn45y

PSA the @GreenGenes2 database still does not have Chloroplast or Mitochondrial taxonomic classifications entered. This may impact your analyses, especially with plant- or host-derived microbiome data. The maintainers know (bit.ly/40mBuyN), but haven't updated as of 4:40 pm 27/10/2024

Hi @wking, Thanks for the ping, regrettably not yet. It is very high on my list of items to address. Best, Daniel

My colleague Ben Mueller and I have new 🧪 stories out about the brain. Ben writes about an implant that allows someone with ALS to talk. I write about how a quarter of unresponsive people with brain injuries might actually capable of sustained cognition. Ben: nyti.ms/4cnatO5 Me: nyti.ms/4dntRfd

A.L.S. Stole His Voice. A.I. Retrieved It.

In an experiment that surpassed expectations, implants in a patient’s brain were able to recognize words he tried to speak, and A.I. helped produce sounds that came close to matching his true voice.

Congratulations to the class of 2024! You've endured a lot and deserve praise for your grit. Your degree will provide you the basis for a lifetime of learning, and hopefully you picked up some dance moves along the way. Time to celebrate with friends and family! www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAyW...

My first formal debate! My partner, Dr. Leo Green, and I gave the audience whiplash. What fun! Leo convinced me of the role of professors in facilitating the AI-human interface. But, I remain concerned that the disruptive potential of AI is not being taken seriously enough at universities.
