Protect Trans Scientists. cowritten with a lot of amazing people (I tagged those I could find but there are so many more incredible folks) www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... @thepunkscientist.bsky.social @jlw-ecoevo.bsky.social @bfrancescol.bsky.social @drsueishaq.bsky.social
Overheard last night at dinner: “My daughter can’t go to HS bc she isn’t vaccinated- it’s ridiculous bc everyone else is vaccinated so there is no chance of her getting sick” 🤦♀️
Do not treat this as fait accompli. We are winning in courts and public opinion. Nominees are being withdrawn. Congress is shook. Musk is leaving. Organize. Call. Appeal. Sue. Keep the pressure on your bosses. Do the same for trans and immigrant rights, public health, and more. Solidarity forever.

YES! These NIH cuts to training grants are especially harmful at lower research active universities. SJSU had our U-RISE program (which we've had since 1988) cut, leaving students w 4 days notice of no stipend and cutting off an important way to get the research experience needed for PhD programs.
Just one example: In the past 2 weeks, NIH has terminated dozens of programs to support students pursuing scientific careers. These MARC or U-RISE (T34) grants provide rising undergraduates with opportunities and stipends to participate in science. Where are these programs? Not in the Ivy league:
Two undergrads in my lab were URISE scholars. One is graduating, but the other was counting on the funds to support her tuition next year (as well as a paycheck). Accepting any recommendations for fellowships she can apply for. She is hispanic if that helps and interested in viral ecology.
Folks, while much of the attention is on Harvard and Columbia's response to the Trump/Musk/RFK Jr. administration, I'd like to point out how #NIH terminations and funding cuts go far beyond this war with the nations' elite universities. 🧵🧪
Bitter sweet emotions for the two current and one former trainees in my lab who received honorable mentions this year...
The NSF's flagship fellowship program typically gives offers to 2,000+ young scientists. This year, in the face of looming budget cuts, that number was halved: only 1,000 received an offer. Our story on what that means for the science talent pipeline: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
🧪 NSF GRFP update! New graduate NSF fellowships will likely be announced this week for the GRFP (see bottom of 🧵 for why). First off, I'm *very* glad to hear of those going forward, given the otherwise bleak year so far for graduate training. Some observations... 1/12
Excited about microbiomes and want to study them at the single-cell level? Join our team to pioneer research using microfluidics paired with automated timelapse microscopy. We're hiring motivated postdocs to push the boundaries of microbial ecology! Apply now: apply.interfolio.com/165601
If you know undergrads who are still looking for a summer research opportunity (esp with the cancellation of so many REUs) - Our NSF BII INSITE is still taking applications for our summer internship program.

I just downloaded the Cruz Database. I was worried when I saw it was an .xlsx file and sure enough... it's not just "bad". It's "Kyle Lamb Spreadsheet" bad (IFYKNK). I will post the csv version to Github shortly - stay tuned.

In case you, like me, are in need of a doomscrolling break, my lab slack is finding out what kind of veggies we’d be: sophie006liu.github.io/vegetal/
What Vegetable Are You?

Brc-bio helped me get my foot in the door. It was the first grant to my lab and really helped encourage me to go for it. This is disheartening to say the least.
Looks like the following programs in #NSF BIO have been 'archived': BRC-BIO - new.nsf.gov/funding/oppo... BIO-LEAPS - new.nsf.gov/funding/oppo... PRFB - new.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...
Gentle reminder that if you truly value diversity in the workforce, top down executive orders may/will change implementation but it shouldn’t change your dedication to building the best possible team/group/cohort/generation of researchers
