this is fascinating, and a great explainer of how AI works, and how today AI has begun cannibalizing its own data because so many sites are protecting themselves with those "verify you are human" things to deter scraping. the biggest LLMs all use the same dataset, and train on their own issue

This is wild: essentially every LLM—ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini—keeps using the same character when asked to make up a story, a guy called 'Elias Thorne'. He appears so much it's impacting Google Trends data and the self-published book market. Now we might know why www.404media.co/elias-thorne...

Phone: “Ashley Lovell!” Ashley, surprised: “Oh! Amelia?” The phone speech bubble points to an illustration of the young woman from Part 1 whose pen Ashley returned, who then invited him to the show he never ended up going to. She is drawn small, cute, and stylised. Ashley: “Sorry~, I should’ve called-” Amelia: “Yeah, you should’ve! First it’s ‘Sorry, I can’t make it’ an hour after the show’s already over, but then you don’t respond to any of my texts!? I thought you’d been kidnapped! When I saw your icon go green just now I nearly died…” Ashley runs a hand through his hair nervously, then rubs his good eye, sleepy. Ashley: “You’re right. I’m a jerk for stressing you out.” Amelia: “Mm… I was just worried. It’s not like you to flake like that. Are you okay?” Ashley: “Yeah. Um… There had been a car crash near where I was walking, so I waited with them until the paramedics arrived.” Amelia: “Oh. Oh wow! I’m so sorry! Wow. Now I feel really bad.” Ashley drags his hand down his cheek, tugging his skin and exposing the inner eyelid of his good eye. Both it and his scarred, dilated eye stare blankly despite his upbeat tone. Ashley: “Don’t~! I should’ve told you sooner. It’s totally my bad.” Amelia: “Was everyone alright…?” Ashley recalls the two gutted humans, infected werewolf howling in pain, Heliotrope unresponsive and bloodied, washed together in murky greens and purples. Ashley, framed from behind, centered along with his speech: “Yeah! They both stabilised in the ambulance.” Amelia: “Oh phew! Okay. Well that’s good. Wow, they’re lucky you were there!” Ashley: “I know, right?” Amelia: “Heh!” Ashley, despondent: “Sorry to make you check on me.” Amelia: “Well, actually, I planned to guilt trip you into coming out with me and Zack and a bunch of others for a Q Center thing this weekend, but I’d understand if you aren’t really in the mood…” Ashley tilts his head up. “This weekend?” Amelia: “Yeah! Drinks and a show at Kitty Kitty. Are you free…?”
