It's a slightly early Werewolf Wednesday, but the night is still young for Lake & Ashley in this week's #Silver&Iron update! 🐺🦇

Silver & Iron: Part Three Pages 41/49

Ashley unceremoniously drains the rest of his bottle of beer in one chug and Lake’s smile falls to genuine surprise. Once finished, Ashley lets out a contented sigh, still grinning. “Fantastic. Fantastic, fantastic, fan-” He’s interrupted by Lake placing his own nearly-full bottle in front of Ashley, who blinks at it, then picks it up, turning to Lake wordlessly for an explanation. Lake, who is not looking at him, only says “I don’t have germs.” Ashley, nervous, confused, laughing: “Ha, ha… Are you trying to get me drunk?” Lake, incredibly sincere: “Off two beers?” Ashley turns sharply away from him, embarrassed, lifting the bottle to drink. (Quickly) “Just kidding. Thanks.” Lake: “I only bought it so I wouldn’t stand out.” Smaller panels draw a link between the lip of the bottle and Lake’s own lips. Ashley: “Va- (emphatically) You guys can’t drink?” Lake looks off to the side, expression neutral. “No, we drink plenty. Just not stuff like beer.” Ashley turns back with some interest: “Oh, really? Because of the yeast, or…?” He startles himself with apparent realisation, spilling a bit of beer. “Oh!!” He chugs more of the beer, eyes darting away, as he imagines the seemingly obvious answer to his question - a cartoony Dracula-like vampire biting and drinking blood from the neck of a swooning, helpless human. Lake, meanwhile, is thinking of a real photo of water pouring into a wine glass, helpfully labeled “wader” (sic) like old school WordArt. He looks utterly oblivious to Ashlely’s inference.

After seeing Hadestown (wow??) and if you like this... you might also enjoy the game Stray Gods-- it pulls an animated musical featuring Greek Gods (also the songs change.. depending on the options to choose WHILE the song is playing in real time. Its honestly incredible how skilled this team is

SILVER & IRON: Part One Ashley Lovell is a hopeful young werewolf who thinks he may have finally met a vampire willing to cooperate with him to eradicate a supernatural disease - only for both men to learn firsthand that your day can always get worse. 40+ pages, all in this thread 🧵🌙 #Silver&Iron

Comic cover titled “Silver & Iron” in all caps, “part one”. The title takes up the entire cover and is superimposed over a single figure standing in the centre of the page, a young but strong-looking man with light skin, visible chest and arm hair, and a beard which tapers into points at his chin and his cheeks. His hair is jaw-length and the top half is tied back, though some strands have come undone. He has upturned eyes and a moderately long nose with a slight bend in the bridge. A scar runs through his left eye leaving the pupil permanently dilated, making it appear darker than his right eye. More writers need to let their characters and stories be messy!! I don't necessarily mean going out of your way to introduce drama for the sake of drama. But I do think a lot of writers see the opportunity for mess, but get scared, and try to neutralise it rather than digging into it

Lake gestures with his own beer somewhere over his shoulder. “We should get a table,” he says, as the bottle he offered passes from his hand to Ashley’s. Ashley, still wide-eyed and stunned, simply replies, “Right.” Lake walks off in the direction that he pointed, leaving Ashley staring after him; he takes a moment before turning to look across the dance floor to his friends at the booth table. They all saw that happen and are staring at him with saucer eyes. Ashley stares back with equally massive saucers. He takes a moment to process, then hits them with a shit-eating shrug and hurries off to follow Lake. Lake has found a smaller round table, built into a secluded alcove, under a focused ceiling light that illuminates the tabletop and not much more. The curved booth could fit four to maybe six people, but Ashley makes it look like a tight squeeze as he slides in opposite Lake, who has sprawled in a manner to accommodate his legs which also happens to look very nonchalant. Ashley, who can’t help but stare: “Um… what- what are you doing here?”

Ashley waits around the crowded bar for his turn to order. The bar lighting more bright and sterile than the rest of the club’s coloured lights, illuminating Ashley as he approaches. He counts on his fingers, thinking: “But still! I used to make it work! It can’t have been six years, can it…?” Someone leaving with their drinks takes a double look at Ashleys height before walking off. Ashley, still thinking: “Did it count with that guy at Chloe’s party- if you have to ask, no, it doesn’t… Oh my God… No wonder Maddoc thinks I’m wound up…” (Aside: I don’t really wanna think about him right now.) Ashley’s eyes turn down. (Thinking) “I did decide I needed to focus on school, but what if I had it the wrong way ‘round? Maybe, to stay focused, I actually needed that outlet- when someone would shut my brain up so I couldn’t think about anything except how good it felt-” Bartender, unseen, interrupting: “What can I get you?” Ashley, smiling with a jolt: “Uh- Yeah! Can I open a tab, and get two beers, a Cos-” Someone else taps a bottle of “De Ville brewery” beer against the countertop, visually cutting off the panel and catching Ashley’s attention, who trails off into “mo…” before his eyes follow up from the bottle to see the person holding it. In the final panel we only see the back of that person’s head, but they have short black hair, and from the perspective they are even taller than Ashley. Ashley stares at them, credit card still outstretched. The bar is lit in blue, but Ashley is stylised in yellow while the new figure is stylised in red.

YOUR PORTFOLIO CRIT
THINGS I'D TELL YOU IF I WERE LOOKING AT YOUR WORK IN PERSON
1 Violating the 180 degree rule makes this sequence hard to follow
2 A few more incidental overlaps will make this foreshortening clearer
3 Symmetrical compositions with a character dead center imply an important moment. Don't draw every panel like that?
4 This __ looks kind of fake. Take the time to look at reference instead of just making it up
5 An establishing shot will help the reader understand where this takes place.
6 Find a life-drawing session to attend, or practice from photos online.
7 Show these pages to someone who doesn't know the story and ask them to tell the story back to you.
8. Nudge this part over a bit to eliminate that tangency.
9 You flattened out the depth by rendering the foreground, middle ground, & background with the same values. Create depth and direct the eye by organizing them into overlapping planes of light & dark.
10 there are better ways to use your time than rendering every brick.
11 these characters look like they're floating (or falling). Draw figures and bg from the same eye level.
12 Unless this will be a wordless comic, leave more room for the lettering
