Happy to share my lab’s latest publication led by Jade Harkin, developing a New Approach Methodology platform to explore the combinatorial effects of inflammatory microglia and astrocytes upon retinal ganglion cells, relevant for glaucoma and other optic neuropathies. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

A human pluripotent stem cell triculture platform to elucidate microglial regulation of retinal ganglion cells in neuroinflammation | PNAS

Optic neuropathies, including glaucoma, are characterized by the progressive degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), ultimately leading to i...

I'm excited to share our PNAS paper from 1st author Kasia Hussey. We study how the foveola, the high acuity region of the retina, is patterned by RA and TH. We were surprised to find that cone subtypes appear to convert fates. Our studies are important for AMD sufferers. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

A cell fate specification and transition mechanism for human foveolar cone subtype patterning | PNAS

In the central region of the human retina, the high-acuity foveola is notable for its dense packing of green (M) and red (L) cones and absence of b...

Check out the latest research from the lab of #IUStemCell member Scott Canfield! In this study, they demonstrate that excessive alcohol levels impair the integrity of the blood-brain barrier in human stem cell-derived models, contributing to the onset or worsening of neurological disorders.

Alcohol diminishes barrier integrity in human stem cell-derived brain microvascular endothelial cells: Role of reactive oxygen species

The World Health Organization has linked alcohol consumption to over 200 diseases including neurodegenerative diseases. A dysfunctional blood–brain ba…
