I had a good bit I wanted to do today but off-protocol live is at an annoying time (dinner) in my current timezone just know I was going to poste a picture of me watching it on my hotel balcony looking at the sea

Hi, I'm Mia! 🏳️⚧️ she/her • 24 • GB • programmer (Rust, ATProto @parakeet.at, Nix, & more) • occasional photographer • maths/stats nerd.
i still currently believe that free and open-source software bundled with self-hosted options are the only sustainable path forward for content creators longterm we should be educating and sharing knowledge on these tools now more than ever

okay so i took my new camera, a Fujifilm X-M5, on a trip with me last week, and I think I'm in love with this thing! The film simulations bring me so much joy and it's really nice to have a proper camera again rather than just the iPhone. grain.social/profile/did:...
Mia on tour (w/c 2026-07-20) by @mia.omg.lol — Grain
Went on a short trip to visit friends, and took my new Fujifilm X-M5 along for the ride!

I want to emphasize: When I say "no" I mean no. If you're buying like, merch from some seller whose money doesn't go directly to JKR, you're still supporting Harry Potter. Every cis person who gives themselves permission to still consume this IP makes it appear okay to others. Stop it. Cut it out.
There is no non-complicit enjoyment of Harry Potter, in 2026. Every time you stream a Harry Potter movie or buy one of her books, etc., you are helping her campaign to end trans lives, full stop.
looks like I missed a whole thing on here today, so, to uplift, here’s a really nice interaction with an old colleague who popped by today: (quietly) told her I’d changed my name since we last spoke, and she stood back and said “nice to meet you, Mia” ☺️
you’re telling me I can just go and have a nice sit down on the train and look out the window at some nice countryside (once you get past Wolverhampton, all my homies hate Wolverhampton) and not have to overly stress about everything like I do when flying? Wonderful!
relatedly, i'm now Wales-pilled and (more) trainpilled
they should invent a Mia that didn't get sick days before going away (and also one that isn't a forgetful mess but don't ask about that)
it's amazing how much better your mental health gets when you go meet up with friends you haven't seen in years for a few days
it's amazing how much better your mental health gets when you go meet up with friends you haven't seen in years for a few days
it's amazing how much better _you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love_ gets when you belt the cure
brewing up several steaming hot takes for one day when they’re needed. (aka editing them to a point that I can tolerate posting them)
not to discourse, but I’m going to be that one last stubborn bitch still writing her own code no matter what. you’ll have to pry nvim and rustc out of my cold, dead hands
some additional capacity alternatives: all microcosm jetstream instances unaffected US: jetstream1.us-east.fire.hose.cam/ EU: jetstream2.fr.hose.cam/
#atdev community, jetstream runs on OVH, which is currently having a major outage jetstream1.us-east.bsky.network appears to still be up though. the other 3 are down
when people talked about hot girl summer, I thought it’d involve, y’know, looking drop-dead gorgeous, not boiling to death
i would love to know why my phone keeps vibrating without any notifications showing up today, great fun thing to keep happening.
Web development fucked. Design fucked. Freelancing fucked. Content creation fucked. Education fucked Blogging fucked. Dev rel fucked. Hard to find a purpose in this brave new world.
the more people I talk to, the more convinced I am that (it's probably fair to say) none of us is okay we're in this together my friends 🫂

You’ll miss the soul when it’s gone
Pretty grim day of news in the industry today, with Salma Alam-Naylor stepping away from developer relations work permanently, Josh Comeau taking a sabbatical from making courses and GSAP’s once-vibrant forums descending into a ghost town. The reason your token guzzler “produces” anything that could be described as “good” is because of the years of […]

it needs to start becoming clear that many, many of the best people in the industry are being so affected by the bin fire that ravenous corporations have turned the internet into that they’re leaving it behind it’s bad, and it’s worse without them
Hi, friends. The last 6 years have been a blast, but I just don't like being on The Internet anymore. I'm leaving DevRel, and I wrote a little bit about why. Look after yourselves, and each other. Love, Salma
LLMs get at something that for me started with tablets replacing computers for some people, which is the deskilling of the public. Computers are complicated and they require a certain amount of skill to properly use and it'd be one thing if they were just being made easier, but they aren't!
The most powerful thing about LLMs continues to be something that search engines with a competent search operator did better 😞
My ATProto projects are probably the last things I have that I’m not burned out on, and it’s the only thing I have hope for on the internet. I’ve been a bit down with parakeet recently but we’re coming back up now I think (and more so when I ship notifications)
Looking at all the tech burnout chat today and realizing that I think getting involved in ATProto has really saved my career. The future is bleak but having something hopeful about it in ATProto and the promise of the open web is keeping me going and excited.
