@yiningkarlli.bsky.social 'a elaborate man-in-the-middle Renderman hackery to simulate scientifically accurate black holes is probably the most mind blowing thing I've seen at SIGGRAPH this year

Today at Pixar's Open Source BoF at SIGGRAPH I'll be introducing USD Web View: an OSS webapp built for meaningful OpenUSD stage access and interaction. The project enables OpenUSD inspection, composition arc access, MaterialX support, Gaussian Splats and more, in one web-native environment:
Annual PSA: It is, indeed, possible to export the SIGGRAPH session schedule to your calendar. That feature is buried in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory, with a sign on the door saying "Beware of the Leopard" s2026.conference-schedule.org/my-agenda/

I’m happy to announce the release of a new open source 3D physics engine called Box3D. I’ve been working on this project for a few years now, but it represents over 20 years of experience writing physics engines for games. Read more here: box2d.org/posts/2026/0...

"Take it from studies of over 450 companies and over three million employees: Return-to-office mandates fail to increase financial returns. They succeed only in motivating star employees to quit, reducing the satisfaction of those who stay and discouraging new talent from joining."
Some bosses say full-time, in-person work boosts productivity or collaboration. “Our new research reveals that the objection to any work from home is more likely to be driven by something else entirely: ego,” write Adam Grant, Marissa Shandell and Courtney Elliott.
A few notes on pragmatic synthetic 4DGS (animated splat) pipelines, simultaneous per-frame camera capture, point clouds, and where I think 4DGS tools may need to go next: michaelybecker.com/notes/prelim...
Preliminary Thoughts About a Practical Synthetic 4DGS Pipeline
Practical notes on synthetic 4D Gaussian Splatting pipelines, flipbook-style capture, synchronized camera rigs, and the tooling gaps around dynamic splat reconstruction.

Do you ever think about the fact that the designers of General Midi were tasked with coming up with the 128 most important instruments in the world, and one of the answers they came up with was "Goblins"
Wrote up a quick note on Gaussian splat capture using Blender, Gauss Cannon, Lichtfield, and SuperSplat. Interesting realization: arbitrary mesh geometry becomes a capture instrument. Each face becomes a camera position, directly shaping training coverage! michaelybecker.com/notes/gauss-...
MaterialX Needs a Single-File Container. Let's formalize what @polyhaven.com and @gpuopen.bsky.social material libraries are already doing with a new "mtlz" extension. Details here: ben3d.ca/blog/materia... CC: @materialx.bsky.social
MaterialX Needs a Single-File Container
MaterialX assets are multiple loose files, which breaks down in real pipelines. The community has already solved this with zip packaging. We just need to formalize it as .mtlz.

Preparing a major PR to improve #ThreeJS MaterialX support significantly. In order to perfect it, I've written an open source @materialx.bsky.social Fidelity Suite inspired by the @khronos.org / @gltf.bsky.social fidelity tool: material-fidelity.ben3d.ca
