I'm not posting Odyssey memes because one must be wary of GIFs bearing Greeks.

Probably more helpful to think of them not so much as “Canadian wildfires” but rather “climate change wildfires currently consuming Canada”
I’m finally going to listen to my doctor and eat more vegetables and get more fresh air
Another historical inaccuracy from Nolan—IMAX had not yet been invented in the Mycenaean period, so this is not the aspect ratio that people saw in! Smh
Would love it if our annual fire drill were not scheduled in the middle of July. Also they didn't tell us about it in advance this time. I wonder if it's because people were responding to fire drill notification by not coming into work at that time.
the claim of fraud is simply the claim that americans who vote for democrats are not legitimate members of the political community and their votes shouldn't count.

«The biases do not disappear; they get encoded into the model and then laundered into outputs that feel objective because they are numerical. Replacing one prestige filter with another that is harder to see or challenge is not progress toward equity in science; it’s the opposite. »
I wanted to like QED's new 1% preprint ranking. I really did. But the more I looked at the data, the more uncomfortable it made me. Here is my full peer review. open.substack.com/pub/blekhman...

The new CEO of the company formerly known as Allbirds has never worn the shoe. "I'm more of a high heels person myself," Nadia Carlsten told Business Insider in an exclusive interview. "I'm blissfully unaware of all things Allbirds." https://bit.ly/4fRZUrW

Exhibit #45726 in why private funding cannot and will not replace government-scale investment in basic science across systems, problems, and project scales
“[HHMI] can just change their mind at any moment,” says a scientist [there]. Yep. It’s great Janelia is making a big, risky bet on one project: transparent fish. That kind of risk used to be hedged by the US govt’s long-term, “let 1000 flowers bloom” basic science approach. But now that’s dying.1/

Update: I wrote the IGV mailing list to ask. But I also noticed they use "Thorvaldsdóttir H" in another one of their papers so that ship may have sailed. groups.google.com/g/igv-help/c...

Reviewers must make factual errors sometimes when giving grants high scores, yet I have never once seen an applicant complain about them
High scores: Excellent reviewers!! Low scores: Reviewers were idiots!!
High scores for my grant = objective truth Low scores for my grant = subjective randomness
I not only discovered the role of Hew alasiigg in the bkalh satdeh, but our work on the Dnt-catenatic pathway revolutionized both corn yields and hair restoration. You can see from that these were long thought independent until publication of our foundational work in 2021 linking them.
@jrossibarra.bsky.social Did you know the human bkalh satdeh is made out of corn kernels???
Look at Figure 1, & you'll understand why "Exploring the Dermatological Applications of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Secretome: A Comprehensive Review" was #retracted. Was published in Stem Cell Research & Therapy. #PeerReview? Ha! link.springer.com/article/10.1... link.springer.com/article/10.1...
I just used the original AI, the human brain, to ‘generate’ an imagining of a freshly baked apple pie cooling on a windowsill. Unfortunately, the LLM in my mind also hallucinated a pie _thief_. I now understand all too well the dangers of this powerful and frightening technology.
False enlightenment is when you learn you’re supposed to mix the cooked spaghetti in with the sauce so the flavors can meld, but true enlightenment is recognizing that all forms of spaghetti have worth and to constrain yourself to any framework is a denial of its beauty
Immensely grateful to #NSERC for 36 yrs of research support via Discovery Grants. I owe nearly my entire scientific career to their strategy to fund long-term programs, not short-term projects. Just signed off on a 0$ balance on my last DG. I dare to think it was a worthwhile long-term investment.
