I was really sad to hear about Dave Rohde's passing. Dave was, of course, an incredible scholar. He was also a great advisor and so many of us owe him a debt of gratitude for helping launch our careers. When I'm puzzled by something, I'll often think to myself, what would Dave do. It usually helps.

My back of the envelop math says turnout was way down for the primary compared to 2018 (the last open primary for gov.) 630k voters for the SQ yesterday compared to 892k for medicinal marijuana. 575k voted for gubernatorial candidates in 2026 vs. 848k in 2018.

Mike Crespin@mikecrespin.bsky.social · 2mo agoJust some turnout benchmarking. Over 452,000 votes were cast in the last open primary for governor of Oklahoma. Keep in mind, the medicinal marijuana sq was on the ballot.
As was pointed out to me, it was obviously Mullin who is heading DHS and not Lankford.
Mike Crespin@mikecrespin.bsky.social · 2mo agoTrump endorsed Jackson Lahmeyer is slightly ahead of Mark Tedford in CD 1. This seat is open after Kevin Hern decided to run for senate after Lankford took DHS. Hern will likely avoid a runoff.
The SQ is down 58-42 with 55% of the vote in. It is only winning in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Cleveland County.
Mike Crespin@mikecrespin.bsky.social · 2mo agoThe SQ to raise the minimum wage is losing with 25% of the vote in. There is a lot of OKC and Tulsa vote out there but it is an uphill climb.
Drummond still up by a bit with over 50% in. Runoff still happening with both at around 25%.

The max gerrymandering wars with frequent redistricting could return us to a weak version of the state party boss world where state legislatures draw districts to favor particular candidates depending on where they have a home. (Candidates can move but that puts them at a slight disadvantage).

Last week I participated in my first viva defense as an external examiner. I have to say this method asks for a much more thorough defense by the candidate.
Tip of the hat to the consultants who convinced candidates to send out this many flyers. I hope you got a kickback from the printer.
