Great program for motivated researchers that could benefit from easier, structured opportunities to discuss early-stage research.
Good research doesn't happen in silos. We built the Social Impact Lab around a simple premise: the most important questions in health and policy need economists, lawyers, and public health researchers in the same room. Open dialogue. Rigor. Ingenuity. That's the culture we're building.

Renaming EVALI to reflect that nicotine e-cigs were not the cause remains critically important. I am hopeful that with Jay Bhattacharya at the helm at CDC, our 2021 petition signed by 75 experts will be given a second look and this scientific misclassification corrected.
More: This gives the Trump CDC an opportunity to right a serious public health wrong that has also impeded a transformation of the marketplace to far safer, alternative nicotine products.
New paper! @mikepesko.bsky.social & @rachelylfung.bsky.social find no meaningful evidence that e-cigs crowd out NRT sales, cessation prescriptions, quitline calls,or smoking quit attempts, suggesting e-cigs reach smokers not interested in quitting otherwise. www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...
Happy to announce the program for the 15th Workshop on the Economics of Risky Behavior, to be held in Cagliari, 🇮🇹 on July 8–9, 2026. Grateful to @au-spa.bsky.social for serving as the main organizer & sponsor, and my local partners—Claudio Deiana, Ludovica Giua, & Marco N. Nieddu—for their support.
I recommend completing your taxes up to the point of submitting, then running through ChatGPT. It saved me a few hundred dollars. You can buy a lot of beer with a few hundred dollars.

I am organizing a session on hearing healthcare for the @ashecon.bsky.social conference in Minneapolis this summer. RE: discussants, would anybody organizing a session on a related topic be interested in having our presenters discuss for each other's session? If so, DM me.
Check out the TOPS website for the video recording 📹from last week's presentation by Bingjin Xue on "The Impact of E-Cigarette Regulations on Birth Outcomes".

Celebrities Are Making Smoking Cigarettes Cool Again
Cigarettes are resurfacing in pop music and movies, raising fears that a yearslong decline in smoking rates could reverse.

There are about 20 pop-level natural experiment-style studies of e-cig regulation on smoking, most of which find e-cig regulation increases smoking.

Your disrespect isn't cool. There is no place in academia for that. Like we told you at the time, have a qualifying co-author submit the work and it will be fairly considered based on its merits, just like any other submission.
#ASHEcon2026 I am organizing 2 sessions for conference in Minneapolis, MN June 7-10. Looking for abstracts: 1) policy revolving around marijuana and alcohol use or co-use of illicit drugs 2) policy food/nutritional changes from drug decriminalization/legalization, or other impactful policy.
I looked at the position paper you referenced. I don't believe it engages a single quasi-experimental study for the conclusions reached. Systematic reviews of the quasi-experimental evidence show the opposite conclusion: e-cigarettes displace smoking.
There are hundreds of longitudinal studies showing what we’d expect: e-cigarettes harm some people and help others. The key question is the net effect.
💬 Viewpoint: Innovations like e-cigarettes provide rapid nicotine delivery with reduced health risks compared to cigarettes, yet misinformation and regulatory barriers limit their impact on smoking-related disease. ja.ma/3KStQGV
New Viewpoint in @jamahealthforum.com with @jhb19.bsky.social, Benowitz, and @rachelylfung.bsky.social. We argue e-cigs are not a radical break, but a predictable technological step in a long history of people seeking rapid nicotine delivery with less harm. Link: jamanetwork.com/journals/jam... 1/3
E-Cigarettes in Historical Context
This Viewpoint discusses the potential for e-cigarettes to displace smoking, restrictive regulations, and public misperceptions amid enduring nicotine demand and persistent smoking-related disease.
