People, including doctors, often have a vague idea that people with #diabetes and especially #type1diabetes shouldn't drink alcohol. But if you ask why, usually they'll say because it has sugar. Actually, the biggest risk is LOW blood sugar. Read more: www.medscape.com/viewarticle/...

Alcohol and Marijuana Use in Type 1 Diabetes: What to Know

People with type 1 diabetes are just as likely to use substances as the rest of the population, so they need to be aware of the risks and how to mitigate them.

Yo, PR folks: If you're going to offer your expert to comment on a recent study, you need to send me the paper so I can see it. Or at the very least, give me the slightest amount of information so I can look it up myself rather than just vaguely alluding to it. 😒

The stat is a few years old, but 40% of adult-onset T1D (in the US) starts out misdiagnosed as T2, and that's only the ones who get corrected. T3c is worse (IIRC >90% mis-dx). Thankfully, we have journalists like @miriametucker.bsky.social who cover this stuff but doctors still need to see/read it.

Stay hydrated, absolutely. But if you have #type1diabetes and wear devices (pump/pod, continuous glucose monitor), another worry is that they'll sweat off despite using adhesives. Options: Apply more adhesive (that may also sweat off), stay inside, and/or try not to move.

Tuesday Heat Check: We're in the low to mid-90s and rising at midafternoon across the DMV (see map of current temps). Reagan National has reached at least 93 (record for the date is 96). Dulles has reached at least 94, breaking record of 92. Stay hydrated if outside.

Hospital policies vary regarding letting people with #type1diabetes keep their insulin pumps on during hospitalization, even when they're able to manage it. Here's some data showing that those who keep them on have better outcomes: www.medscape.com/viewarticle/...

Continued Insulin Pump Use in the Hospital Improves Outcomes

Allowing patients to keep using their personal diabetes technology during hospitalization improves glycemic control and reduces length of stay.

A person with nausea/vomiting/extreme fullness is diagnosed with #gastroparesis via positive gastric emptying study. If negative and no other cause found, the dx is "functional dyspepsia." Some experts see 2 different conditions, others say it's a continuum that needs a new name.

Most healthcare professionals likely know that there's some complexity in the diagnosis of #gastroparesis and that only one drug is approved in the US to treat it. But, there's a lot more to it... www.medscape.com/viewarticle/...

While A1c is the favorite among pharmaceutical companies because it is so easy to measure, there is a push to expand beyond that as the sole metric used. But consider exactly WHERE the pushback is strongest before making any conclusions.

Interesting debate at #ATTD2026 : Is it time for continuous glucose monitoring metrics to replace hemoglobin A1c in #diabetes management? www.medscape.com/viewarticle/...
