It takes the strengths from each genre and remixes them to eliminate what would be their standalone weaknesses. I wrote a post detailing the thoughtful design (links in comments below).

This game works so well as a chess game but also as a standalone, unique tactics roguelike thing. Very crunchy and satisfying! Also shares a designer with @beastieball.bsky.social, Damian, and I can vouch that guy knows a thing or two on how to make a fun game
