Working with Blizzard in the mid 00s started like a dream: great games, great people, great rates. And it ended a few years later like a nightmare, nearly putting our small team out of business. Nothing new under the sun...

It is funny that a multi-million dollar company with more than a million daily players in their most famous mmorpg can't afford to pay more to agencies that these poor souls only offer what's in the mail. I got offered that rate in another agency, settled on a higher one and never got any work.

Blackmailing experienced translators is not limited to the video games sector. I know for a fact that many freelancers working with Smartling have received very similar emails a few months ago. They were translating all kinds of content for some of the biggest brands in the world.

"Game dev is one of those jobs you only do when you really want to. It's not going to make your parents proud, you're unlikely to get rich in an industry that lays off people for making superhits, and its a demanding & confrontative job. Why would you let a machine do the thing you're here to do?"

I spent the last few months talking to over 30 game developers about generative AI. It began as a sort of interview survey but became a pretty comprehensive collection of arguments against the technology altogether. www.gamesradar.com/games/why-so...

There're folks who believe media should only ever be pure feel-good entertainment. That any depiction of bad events or uncomfortable themes should be proscribed. However, art has always been a way for people - artists & consumers - to process and convey fears, anxieties, traumas and much more.

Congrats to the BAFTA winners but more than anything: huge support to @silverscriptgames.bsky.social who's had their trailer removed at the very last moment. Indie games tackling difficult (& real) topics are ✨important✨, please go wishlist The Quiet Things 🤍 store.steampowered.com/app/2288520/...
