You have to understand the cultural context of the original and the culture of your intended audience. You have to understand the feelings that are intended to be inspired as well as the meaning of the words. Translating a long work means understanding the whole as well as the parts.
“She’s just a translator” shows that you don’t understand what translation is. Some of this comes from the ‘automation’ of translation, through things like Google translate. It’s as though it’s just looking words up in a dictionary. No. It’s an art and a science at once. To get meaning and feeling.

The tiresome online discourse around translations makes it pretty clear that many people still have a very facile view of what a translator does or ought to do, that translators should be slavishly literal and strive to be invisible and as normative as possible. They think monkeys can do this job.

What she said stuck with me: The kids no longer believe anything online & have developed ann apathy for life. The elders believe EVERYTHING online & she’s watched her mum get more right wing.

The thing about basing the political culture of your movement around baseless conspiracy theories is that you run the risk that your followers will fall for conspiracy theories about YOU.
