Day 4 of #IAS_NUQ at #IAMCR2026! Our director, Clovis Bergère, presented "Bringing Africa Online: Imaginaries of Youth and the Early Days of Popular Computing in Guinea-Conakry."

@mkraidy.bsky.social wrapped up the day with the plenary "Communicating Peace in an Era of War," reflecting on the future of multilateralism and the role of communication in an increasingly polarized world.

Her documentary explored how displaced communities remember a homeland they can no longer return to, examining how memory is carried through stories, family histories, objects, and everyday acts of remembrance across generations.

Next up, our #IAS_NUQ Global Undergraduate Fellow Isra Fejzullaj presented "My Soil, My Soul: The Cham Struggle to Remember and Revive."

Her presentation explored how participatory digital storytelling, audio, and AI can create more ethical forms of representation that center the aspirations and resilience of young women from Cape Town.

Their presentation challenged dominant understandings of the digital, noting that while the internet’s Anglo-American origins still shape how digital technologies are imagined, global digital production has now shifted decisively beyond the West.

Chafic Tony Najem followed with his paper, “The Negation of Zero: Alienation, Refusal, and Confrontation in Arab and African Thought,” which explored refusal, silence, and confrontation as ways of resisting ideological nullification.

Then, Angela Haddad, our #IAS_NUQ postdoctoral scholar presented “A ‘Possible Modernity’: The Arab Self, Diaspora, and Cultural Rapprochement in the Waning Years of Third World Solidarity."

Next up, Clovis Bergère presented “Echoes and Overlaps of Youth in Williams Sassine’s Chroniques Assassines,” exploring youth not simply as an age group, but as a concept and method for rethinking media studies across African and Global South contexts.
