DT awoke in the inn to the light and silence.
Arbert informed her that the others had begun a frantic search for ways to save her, though that matter was overshadowed by what she had seen in the moments before the gunshot. The face of a familiar man, one who she had longed to see for years, half obscured by blinding light that framed his form. Just as she had before their climb up Mt. Gulg.

She hardly heard the door open as the green haired Hyur stumbled into her room. Although he had taken a considerable blast from the aftershocks of her near transformation, the doctor was still determined to keep watch over his ward.

"You're awake. Thank the twelve." He breathed, exhaustion and illness clear in his features as he surveyed the damage, and searched for any sign of progression.

"Hyutt– " DT's voice rasped through the silence. He'd know what the truth was. She couldn't trust her eyes, her memories, but her doctor, Hyutt had never once lead her astray.

"It doesn't seem to be getting worse... At least from my limited vision." He continued, unabated, business as usual.

"Hey, on the mountain. When the light was... when the Exarch's hood flew back..." She tried again, her gaze searching his while he seemed to avoid hers.

"Stay put, get rest. Let the rest of us figure things out this time." The tall hyur straightened up. Was he avoiding her? She needed answers! The warrior of light's hand shot out, grabbing his arm, shaky fingers wrapping around his wrist. Desperation feeding her every movement and word.

"Hyutt. I could have sworn. I saw him. G'raha. That... That wasn't real right?" Her voice cracked with the effort of her plea for clarity. A shaky smile spread across her face as she continued to desperately search her closest friend's face for the truth that would ease the anxiety that choked her, "There's no way, right? G'raha Tia. He wasn't.... I was just seeing things, right?"

The doctor didn't answer.
"That's a symptom! A... Halluci...nation...?” The miqote woman felt faint, her heart threatening to beat through her chest. Why wasn’t he saying anything?! “Alisaie said… both of you told me that's a symptom! So that's what it was, right?!"

Hyutt stood completely still, eyes on her face as she scrambled to make sense of it all, her fingers clawing at his sleeve. And then DT watched, as her doctor, her closest friend who knew everything about her and all of the time she had spent waiting for G'raha to awaken at the tower. The man who never would sugar coat anything and who she could rely on to tell her the truth.
She watched as his frown deepened and he looked away. And her heart shattered as she realized what that heavy silence meant.

The entire time. The man she had been waiting for, and grieving for while she spent time on the First had been right in front of her the entire time. And now he had been shot and taken away by the Ascian she had made the choice to befriend. What kind of hero... What kind of friend is too stupid and blind to have seen it coming. G’raha tia could be dead. And it was all her fault.

WIP aka 950 words of 5.4 thancred wanting to fistfight a cat

Thancred paces like a caged animal. He knows not if it’s the temporal displacement or aetheric readjustments (or whatever fanciful words Krile had used to brace the Scions of the possible maladies they might face), but on the fourth day of returning to the Source, Thancred finds himself unable to contain his restlessness any further.

And so he paces. Down the halls, past the simmerpots Tataru had lovingly brewed, and finds himself time and time again staring down the selfsame door as before.

The door itself is nothing unique, but it is slightly ajarred and through the crack, Thancred can make out Alisaie sitting comfortably cross legged on the bed. She is deep in conversation, a relaxed expression plastering her face, but as Thancred shifts to the left and spots unmistakably auburn hair and feline ears, something irritating stirs in his gut.

He wants to feel grateful; he knows he should. The man had by all accounts championed the very reason he or any other is standing here today. He knows the sacrifices of life and limb all too well and rummages through the mosaic of feelings in his chest in search of any semblance of gratitude. Then he hears a familiar voice cut through his thoughts, and he knows he’s lingered a heartbeat too long.

“Thancred?” Alisaie tilts her head from beyond the jarred door, noticing the way his fists are clenched. “Is aught alright?”

“Copecetic,” he smiles through gritted teeth without missing a beat.

Thancred turns to leave only to find that despite his best efforts, he could not find the peace he so desperately searches for in his heart.

Instead, he finds only spite.

The next few days pass by like molasses. G’raha Tia had grown quickly to somewhat of a prolific figure, making his presence known much to Thancred’s dismay. He notices the way the Miqo’te drifts into conversations, albeit hesitant and awkward at first but quickly finding his voice amongst the others as if he belongs. He interjects himself with comfortable familiarity in spaces previously reserved for what Thancred considers to be for family and on the sixth day, Tataru moves G’raha’s belongings from the medical ward to the empty quarter across Thancred’s room. The others continue to remark what a help he’s been, lavishing him with praise and affection, but Thancred knows best. He sees the insincerity; the childlike play-acting as if he is not speaking to a man one hundred years his age. And he sees the hypocrisy, the walking contradiction of a man both new and old, green yet more world-worn than any professor he’s had at the studium. He doesn’t know which personality is the lie, but it matters not. He’s shown he’s more than apt at manipulation once upon a universe away.
On more than a few occasions, Thancred sees the way the man lingers in his periphery, quietly watching, always observing. He knows there is nothing he commands, but the eeriness of being watched stirs a familiar feeling. He is sure if the Miqo’te had a magic mirror, he would undoubtedly plant himself in front of it like so many times before and assert authority without even feigning the need for permission, even out of basic courtesy.

But they are not on the First. They are in the Rising Stones still too close to the Crystal Tower for comfort and the claustrophobic proximity of their rooms does little to ease his irritation.

On the eighth day of their return, G’raha Tia solidifies himself as a member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn.

Thancred Waters punches a hole in his chamber’s wall.

The crowds ebb and flow to the Rising Stones, eager to meet this new acclaimed member. They centralise on him like fish to bait, curious to hear the same tale Thancred’s lived a thousand times in his nightmares. G’raha is more than happy to oblige. He perches himself at the crowds center, like some crude parody of some religious painting of the Twelve. They gather with reverence in their eyes and when G’raha pitches his voice half an octave lower, Thancred finds himself back in the Ocular, naked and afraid.

That night, Thancred storms across the hall and finds G’raha on a bed no one’s slept in since Minfilia.

“There you are.”

“Thancred-” G’raha sits up to address the man but Thancred moves fast, snatching his wrist and shoving him back onto the bed with abandon. “Thancred, what is the meaning of this-”

“Y’know, you’ve been a real pain to find a moment alone with, don’t you?” He cuts him off through gritted teeth. “And you ought to know I’m real glad the vessel worked. You and I have unfinished business.”

G’raha props himself up but in whatever remnant of sleep, he finds himself slow and pinned down by a knee. He looks up to find an expression he has not seen before and opens his mouth to speak, but Thancred presses his hand against his jaw in a vice-like grip.

“You’ve always seemed so much taller over there. So much bigger,” the words bitter on his tongue. “Did you feel that way too? Always looming over us. Always so dignified. It must’ve been fun, wasn’t it?”

G’raha tests against his weight, but he has been indisposed for years longer, and his muscles atrophied. He bucks his hips, but against the full weight of the Hyur, he does little more than entangle himself further into the threadbare blanket. Thancred digs in, leering over the man so close he could feel the hot breath on his face.

“Well?” He mocks. “Was it fun? Tell me. Because I’m having a lot of fun right now.”

nearly 1k words into writing this fic that can only be described as "thancred is a hyur with tia energy and g'raha is a tia who's a nunh in thancred's mind" and the working title is "grandaddy issues disguised as exarch issues disguised as daddy issues"
