Two male green woodpeckers face each other swaying their heads side to side. This rarely seen behaviour is an aggressive territorial threat display fighting over food or territory. It’s the first time I have ever seen this behaviour. Middleton Lakes.

After this mornings torrential rain, I had decided on a rare day in. Feet up and catch up on some reading. I was tempted off the sofa by this fantastic find by @mattp1975.bsky.social 👏🏼 A very obliging Red-necked Phalarope. Kingsbury Water Park.

Nice afternoon out birding. Black Necked Grebe. I stayed for 2 hours hoping it would come closer, but it didn’t. Photographed with iPhone through spotting scope. #LadywalkNR
What a find at #LadywalkNR this afternoon. 3 Hummingbird Hawkmoth actively nectaring together on Buddleia. The speed with which they from one bloom to the next in a darting motion is amazing. #Teammoth
400 grass and wildfires in the West Midlands in the last week. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Why has the West Midlands had so many fires?
The region has seen large wildfires during the hot, dry weather this summer.

Juvenile Bittern enjoying the evening sunshine. @staffswildlife.bsky.social @staffsbirdnews.bsky.social
A couple of Juvenile Bittern interacting in the reeds. I saw these on an evening walk earlier in the week.
Lunar Hornet moths I saw today at #LadywalkNR Tried 2 areas and saw 6 of these moths. This is stunning mimicry! #Teammoth
A couple of new for garden moths for me last night. There were more moths around the trap than in it! #Teammoth
Up and out at 4.30am this morning to have a wander before it got too hot. It was well worth the effort.
Got final totals checked this morning from the #LadywalkNR team and we finished the day on 101. Nothing amazing with Med gull probably the best bird of the day but one I missed. Always good to get a 100+ birds and good that predominately it was breeding birds with not much passage #westmidsalldayer
Hooded Merganser Alvecote pools. I tried a bit of video. @mercianbirding.bsky.social @westmidbirdclub.bsky.social
Like many I have visited Alvecote pools for the Hooded Merganser. It has proved difficult to photograph. Always distant and usually silhouetted. This is about the best I’ve managed. @westmidbirdclub.bsky.social
