Professor of Social Policy and Inequality at the University of Glasgow.
Today is the 180th anniversary of Elsie Inglis's birth. She obtained the Triple Qualification in medicine in 1892, founded a maternity hospital in Edinburgh, spoke at suffrage events organized by Milicent Fawcett, and during WWI created the Scottish Women's Hospitals. #WomenInSTEM #MedSky ⚕️
I am appalled at how Jason Arday was treated and I'm devastated he's dead. It was racism pure and simple. Cambridge sought attention with a high profile academic that was held up too high and thrust into the spotlight without any support.
White professor ‘ MattGPT ‘ whose most recent book contained fabricated quotations, non-existent source references, & left ChatGPT URLs accidentally embedded in footnotes is sad about Jason Arday’s death but still wants Arday & all black academia held to higher standards than his own writing .
My latest article, on the new series of A House Through Time, staring tomorrow on BBC Two at 9m. Set in the amazing, beautiful, gothic city of Edinburgh.
‘Houses with long histories are magical’: David Olusoga on the home history show that’s gripped the UK
At first, I worried that only historians would find A House Through Time compelling. But its appeal is so enduring that fans of the show stop me in the street to ask when they can watch more

Is welfare spending ''out of control''? It's estimated to be 11.1 per cent of GDP this financial year. That's just 1.1 per cent of GDP higher than in 2007-08, and total welfare spending has actually fallen by 0.9 per cent of GDP since 2012-13 ⤵️

Amid SNP child poverty drive, government pursues mothers fleeing domestic abuse for their ex’s debts
The SNP government is committed to tackling child poverty but debt collection by public bodies can be more aggressive than in the private sector and also unwittingly punish survivors of domestic abuse

Proud to have been involved in this important research, which shows single parent families are most impacted by public debt. ⬇️
Today with @trusselluk.bsky.social & @opfs.org.uk, using Scotland data from @citizensadvicescot.bsky.social & @stepchange.bsky.social, we’ve launched new research into the public debt crisis. Discover how women are more likely to experience public debt which traps their family in poverty.
We’re calling on clear action to tackle the public debt crisis, help reduce #ChildPoverty and better support for women and their families affected by public debt. Read the full report and recommendations: https://www.aberlour.org.uk/publications/gendered-nature-public-debt #Aberlour150
Aberlour | The Gendered Impact of Public Debt
Living on a low income is strongly gendered in nature, with women, often due to social and family roles, experiencing greater levels of poverty.
