The FIFA World Cup was hosted in Toronto this summer, bringing hundreds of thousands of visitors to watch the games. Now that the World Cup is over, what lessons can the City take from hosting the tournament, and how can it make transit better long after the final whistle? Link in bio.

Some good news from the TTC's upcoming board meeting documents. Metrolinx has opted into the Automatic Train Control contract option awarded on Wednesday for the Scarborough Subway Extension. The extension will have modern signalling from opening unlike originally planned.
Toronto's new LRT lines are significantly faster than when they opened. Line 5 riders are saving 8 minutes on average for trips from Mount Dennis -> Kennedy compared to opening. Finch LRT riders are saving 15 minutes on average for trips from Finch West -> Humber College. 1/2
We hear far too many horror stories of near-misses from streetcar riders. Automated camera enforcement is just one part of the equation. We also need safe infrastructure that prevents incidents from happening in the first place! The solution already exists. Fund more platforms like this, please!
TTC ran a “pilot project” to track the number of cars illegally passing streetcars at stops: “Preliminary data indicates that near-miss incidents may be very pervasive and that there is likely merit to developing a technology-based solution to this problem” Shocker. secure.toronto.ca/council/agen...

The fact that they didn't bother to install Presto readers or ticket machines at Stratford station makes me question how permanent the service really is... www.gotransit.com/en/find-a-st...
🚆 The GO Train is back in Stratford! After years without rail service since the pilot service to London was cancelled, GO trains are once again connecting Stratford to the regional network. This marks an important step toward providing more transportation options for residents and visitors alike.
Today is the first day of permanent GO train service to Stratford. What we need now is for Metrolinx to purchase the rail corridor and upgrade track to increase speed. Stratford -> Kitchener currently takes 53 minutes, but it can be under 30 minutes with simple track upgrades.

These new steel barriers are a step in the right direction, but they cannot substitute the safety and reliability benefits of real platform edge doors. Back in October, City Councillors voted to defer a plan to install platform edge doors at TMU station due to costs and insufficient funding.

We're very disappointed to see that the initial pilot project to install platform edge doors on the subway has been downgraded to metal fences (seen in NYC), paired with track detection systems. This does not provide the full benefits of Platform Edge Doors. 1/4

This is a perfect example of one of the reasons we have absurd transit costs. We can only compare ourselves to other Canadian and American agencies such as the MTA, who consistently have some of the worlds highest construction cost. Platform doors in Europe are 10x cheaper.
It appears the new target opening for the Yonge North Subway Extension is 2034. Not surprising considering this project took several more years in planning compared to our other projects. Tunnelling is expected to begin later this year or early next year. www.thestar.com/news/gta/met...
