🧵In the summer of 1797, 22-year-old J. M. W. Turner embarked on an eight-week tour of Northern England that transformed his early career. While passing through West Yorkshire, Turner was captivated by the medieval Chantry Bridge spanning the River Calder in Wakefield. He initially captured
This isn't an anachronism per se but portraits of characters in tv/film are atrocious, especially when the characters are supposed to be immensely wealthy. Darcy would likely have hired Thomas Lawrence for his portrait so I wish his style had been mimicked. This looks unfinished and sad.
Prompts a fun question: whats the most niche historical inaccuracy in a piece of work that annoys you Not like 'oh they were referring to the wrong king' , more 'they had the wrong king on a banknote in one scene'
I went to school with a Doris and I'm 37
Why do book characters consistently have wildly anachronistic names. Anne Hathaway is currently playing a Colleen Hoover character who is a women in her early 40s in the 2020s named *Verity Crawford* Other media does not do this, if this was an original film she’d be called Lucy
Cloudy with a chance of vanishing into the woods, never to be seen again.
okay but this has reminded me that, as a kid, I thought a book that was sold as a bestseller was one of the best selling books of all time. I was really surprised by how much absolute crap was included in that hallowed list. which was catalogued by The Times for some reason.
bear with a question if you will, trying to check something real quick. Without googling, what do you think is the 2nd best selling series of all time
Yes - in a little cottage, by a range stove, laundering pocket handkerchiefs

I maintain that the first series of Downton Abbey was genuinely very good television but they fucked it so royally immediately afterwards that I cannot stand any of it.
What TV show got so bad it effectively destroyed your appreciation for the show when it was was good?
I'm working on my mandarin vocabulary at the moment but I'd forgotten how frustrating this is, I will look up a word and find seventeen different translations for it, each of which also has eight related but different meanings.
I'm unsure if I was hard as nuts or just sheltered as a kid because I don't remember finding any fictional media scary. but the news was horrifying to me. the BSE outbreak/vCJD is the first big news story I remember and it fucked me up.
In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?
I voted for 910 because she's my queen but Backpack is such a worthy winner. A real chill guy, a survivor, an absolute hunk of a chunk. and look at him as a tiny guy, with his legendary mum Holly (who won in 2019)
Meet Backpack, your 2026 Fat Bear Week champion. Backpack is 20 years old, weighs about 1,000 pounds and got his nickname because, as a cub, he loved riding on his mom's back across the Brooks River.

There's a map issued to Polish airmen in WW2 that has all the place names spelled phonetically because they were being given directions in English by ground control.
my ME/CFS is mild. I am thankfully able to work. I could not work without my partner doing the bulk of the housework, preparing healthy meals and clean clothes etc. I have almost no life outside of work. I can't work full time and realistically I know I'm working more than my body is able.
Here's today's column on the astonishing, ongoing mistreatment of people with #ME/CFS. Please spread it far and wide: the only thing which can break the media's wall of indifference is seeing an article about the issue go viral. Thank you. 1/2 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Abandoned, dismissed and gaslighted: there is no excuse for the way ME sufferers have been betrayed | George Monbiot
Changes in guidance and science seem to have little impact on millions of devastated lives. It’s a social crisis playing out behind closed doors, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Very dandy dandy, 1615. Everything extreme, from cartwheel collar to super-long sword. Drawn by Willem Buytewech.
I gave a presentation on this at uni in Mandarin! It was terrible! there have been a large number of thefts of Chinese items from Western museums as China forcibly repatriates their history
In October 1860, British & French troops punitively captured, sacked, & burned the Summer Palace outside Beijing. In the midst of the looting, a Pekinese dog was found in a palace closet. It was taken home to England & eventually became Queen Victoria's beloved pet: "Looty."
Last one for tonight. No not John Atkinson Grimshaw but a painting of Upper Westgate Wakefield (1896) by son Louis Hubbard Grimshaw (1870–1944). Like his father he produced many evening scenes lit by artificial light and moonlight. The painting is now in the collection of the Hepworth Wakefield.
I think that, when the welfare and futures of women and girls are put in jeopardy by their government, citizens should be allowed to leave their country actually. that's why I support afghan refugees :) :)
