"Downplaying of climate change is helped by media coverage showing people sunbathing, rather than dehydrated gig economy workers driving unsafely and at risk of heatstroke, or shift workers in overheated workplaces loading your newly ordered fan into a box."

The summer heatwave of 1976 broke temperature records but this year's heatwaves show that human-induced global warming is to blame | Simon Ferrigno @brexcyclopaedia.bsky.social

Appreciate this is 'make it make sense' howling into the void, but the failure (with some exceptions) of government, politicians, media, and business to point at the heatwaves and fires and state 'this is why climate action matters' is a serious problem. www.businessgreen.com/blog-post/45...

Summertime silence

This is misleading. If you say the Rhine’ s “water levels drop to lowest level since 1880,” that implies that the river was this dry in 1880. But 1880 is just when we started keeping records! So what you need to say is: the river is at its lowest level since records began.

No wonder other 'leaders' want to get rid of Pedro Sánchez. He speaks the truth: “Climate change kills: ... people ..., our ecosystem, our biodiversity, and it also destroys the things we as a society hold dear – our houses, our businesses, our livestock.” www.theguardian.com/environment/...

The Republican Party has gone full mask-off Nazi; meanwhile the media narrative being pushed 24/7 is “ahhh! Democrats are being taken over by socialist radicals!!” and their terrifying examples are Miss Rachel, a doctor who wants you to have healthcare, and the friendliest mayor in American history.

Hey friends, @antoniajuhasz.bsky.social is an amazing investigative journalist who shares gift links, articles I would otherwise not see, and also her own reporting in Rolling Stone and elsewhere. She brings a deep knowledge of the oil industry and the Gulf South. Are Follow Fridays still a thing?

In fifteen years, the UK has deleted coal power from their power system, halved fossil gas use, replaced most of that with wind and solar, and the country has not suffered the hellish blackout apocalypse conservatives and media outlets promised would happen. ember-energy.org/data/electri...

Stacked area chart showing UK electricity generation (terawatt‑hours) from 2000–2025, highlighting a steep fall in coal, declining gas and nuclear, and steady growth in wind, solar and other renewables over time.

Is “pragmatic” the new, “grown up” word? Andy, there’s nothing “pragmatic” about drilling for more oil & gas - to even consider it with the planet literally on fire is total madness. How many times must we say it will do nothing for energy bills or security? It would be an act of utter recklessness

@andyburnham.bsky.social 360,000 people evacuated across France and Spain due to wildfires 2,868,400 people evacuated in China due to Typhoon Bavi Drought declared across half of England That's just the beginning. And you know why? "Pragmatic" burning of oil & gas means more climate change.

Notable: In its 15th 5-Year Plan, China pledges for the first time to "constructively lead the multilateral governance process to address climate change,” so that its "influence, guiding capacity, shaping power and moral appeal in global climate governance will be significantly enhanced."

The language reflects a recent shift from China's previous positioning, when the nation - the world's largest source of greenhouse gas emissions - had described itself in official documents "as a participant, contributor and leader" in global
climate efforts.

one tendency that comes out about period films is the insistence that XYZ moral thought would not have occurred to anyone in the ancient world. to be sure there are moral innovations and changes but the existence of thorough dissatisfaction with the present moral order is not a modern phenomenon
