A Dublin #painting "Grattan Bridge, Two Domes" I painted in the mid-1990s essentially as a study for a another painting - one which I never got around to starting until over twenty yrs later. This hangs in the US because stupidly I gave it away. Still like remembering it though. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Landscape format but nearly square. In acrylics but used as wet as watercolours on mixed media paper. Very sketchily painted with big broad strokes of colour washes with loosely painted dark lines giving shape and form. Centre is the back to back sea-horses and pole of a hippocampus lamp coming out of the top rail and latticework - all is green painted metal with some dark shadows and yellow highlights to indicate sun. Behind is the River Liffey to the west with red buildings on the quays of both sides above the river walls, and the dome of the Adam & Eve church on Merchants Quay on the left, and the dome of the Four Courts on the right further back in behind buildings due to the bend in the river further on. The river wall on the left, southside quay, is in shadow rendered as very dark blue, whereas the river wall on the right, northside quay, is in sunlight rendered in light orange. Sky is a loosely washed streaky blue. I took this photo before I added my signature.

An Irish #painting from a while back. I painted "Newgrange Kerbstone" during a phase of painting rocks and stones. It shows the right half of Kerbstone 52, at the rear of the mound directly in line with the entrance to the passage tomb and its more famous entrance kerbstone. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. On a black background is the flat side of a large rock with carvings. The edge of another large rock is at the right side with in between the two large rocks a couple of dozen small rocks, rendered with hard graphical curved and straight edges and the background black between them. All rocks are shades of warm and cool greys. The carvings feature several cup holes with ovals around them and concentric arcs adjoining. The rock with the carvings, the one on the left dominating the painting, also has several fissures cutting into it from the edge. They are also black. Portrait format in acrylics on canvas. Against a sky of painterly rich yellow, with very soft subtle hints of orange and green, are two chimney stacks of approx. equal height. On their top halves they have six red bands separated by white bands, and on their lower halves are green-grey concrete which broadens slightly as they approach the bottom. Blocking the view of their very bottoms is a pier of which we see the rear of its stone wall, rendered in blue with paler blue stones and top, and below it to the water a band of rip-rap rendered in dark blue with orange and light blue pieces. Protruding up from the other side of the pier are a few white masts and a lamp-post. The water is pale blue and green heavily sparkling with white dashes and dots, much more heavily so on the right half. Beyond the pier and before the left chimney are blockish buildings in various blues. Behind the stacks along the horizon in the distance is a band of pale blue indicative of a tree line of buildings or both.

A #painting of some birds. "Rooks, Wires, Hedgerow" came out of a menacing afternoon when I cycled around West Cork. The coastline looked magnificent but I spent a lot of time looking at rooks. In general you can't go too far wrong when you spend a lot of time looking at rooks. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Landscape format in painterly acrylics on mixed media paper. Against a dark cloudy sky of lilac and blue a dark wooden telegraph pole rises from the busy thicket of a hedgerow and tilts to the left. On the wires it supports, both left and right, and on the supporting wires, are about two dozen rooks. Birds and pole are silhouetted; hedgerow is a mess of tangled lines, mostly black but with some blue, pale green and dark red also. The hedgerow runs across the full width of the painting, occupying about a quarter of the bottom albeit slightly sloping up from left to right, much like the wires at the top of the picture attached to either side of the main pole. The waterford, now frequently called "the Irish haiku" has become a global sensation. It is a positive poem of 4 lines, 8-4-4-8 syllables, the fourth line rhyming with the first, and the third line rhyming with the second. Deceptively simple. The waterford's versatility is one of its great attractions, not only to read, but also to write. Only 24 syllables, and 800 years younger then both the limerick and the haiku, the waterford is already finding its place.

#painting Once upon a time I took a lift to a random place in rural England, then walked for over 30 km right through the night. At one point I climbed up a tree and slept for bit. Later to escape the dew I lay on a picnic table outside a pub beside the Trent and watched the "Sunrise at Gunthorpe".

Two boats in coverings are dark brown almost in silhouette moored to a narrow jetty on a river that runs from the bottom right quadrant to a point half way up the left side. The rive, from left to right, is in loosely vertical bands of blazing red, bright yellow, and dark brown, each section of which has contrasting individual short horizontal brushstrokes, of yellow on red, orange on yellow, and orange and yellow on the brown. The bottom left quadrant is where the dark triangle of the left river bank is, rendered in very dark brown with lots of highlighted coloured strokes of orange, pink, blue, red and green. The far bank running almost the full width of the painting is a low grey horizontal cloud of mist sitting on the river, and behind it is a mass of trees rendered in dark green with highlighted strokes of paler greens and yellows and some orange. The sky is the top third of the painting, a fiery red-orange in the left, ochre in the middle and dark brown on the right, all with horizontal short wide strokes of pale yellows and oranges. The jetty runs parallel with the river bank and further away in the distance is another boat, while to the left of it on the bank is the silhouette of a leafless tree of a handful of branches. Time for a more recent #painting, a west of Ireland one. "Connemara Bog" came out of my time in the bogs of south Connemara where I have cycled, walked, and dreamed. I'm due back for a recharge. #SpéirGhorm #ColorADay #BlueTue #ArtYear

Square format in acrylics on canvas in painterly but simplified shapes. Along the horizon sits a very dark low wide turquoise mountain, with a peak left of centre. In front of it are low dark blue hills with two rounded peaks, and in front of it an even darker, almost black, sliver of land before there is an even narrower sliver of water rendered in very pale teal. In front of that is a band of land coloured ochre with hints of alizarin, with on the right 3 piles, in magenta, possibly of turf. In front of that is the bottom half of the painting, all water in various shades of turquoise, all paler than the mountain across the top. Graphical shapes in the water suggest reflections and rocks with some vertical markings, both soft and hard edged, suggesting reeds - including several distinct individual blades of ochre, maroon, and rust.
