Something new from the AI/academia interface: just got a citation alert pointing to a book that appears to be AI generated and only available through a link on a single Youtube video by an account with three followers to a payment processor I've never heard of for sixty dollars.

Got another one of those fake bookclub AI scam emails, which somehow managed to get the title of my book wrong? Unimpressed, old school scammers would not have made such a rookie mistake.

Okay finished this, decent fun! Most interesting bit was the suggestion that ancient Romanian paganism was a continuation of a secret Egyptian cult that had unlocked various psychic powers; unfortunately, the narrative jumps over the section where the protagonist goes to Egypt to learn those arts...

Reading this for summer fun (found it on a supermarket giveaway shelf), it's about a Dacian pagan monk who travels to Egypt to learn telepathy and then to Constantinople to save Christianity or something; anyway I'm sure it's all an analogy for something but I know nothing about 1920s Romania so...

It has been brought to my attention that the forest fires around Bordeaux are burning up the pine plantations set up on drained wetlands there in the 19thC, a project widely admired and imitated around the world. In case someone wants to fund my global history of pine project.

I would have preferred Ridley Scott filming The Odyssey, just so journalists could ask him about his views on historians again.

My handwriting's been pretty bad since whenever but there was a period when I was trying to improve it and then I became a historian and let it deteriorate again on purpose because it's not my job to make your job easier.

Do people have any takes on the Oxford Research Encyclopedia online resources? I've been asked to contribute to one and, although I'm aware they exist, I don't think I've ever come across one in the wild. But then I haven't been a student for a long time and I guess they're aimed at that audience.

Big fan of The Fog; first time I saw it I went in under the misapprehension that it was an adaptation of Stephen King's The Mist. Which it noticeably is not, there are way more ghost pirates for example.

This might require extended discussion of what a "great album" is, exactly, but I'm going to say Aimee Mann: easily an all-time top 10 artist for me yet without a clear standout album.
