I think this is where the challenge lies, we can't use schools to tell kids which is good and which is bad information, but help them develop the critical thinking and media literacy skills the they need to make that judgement themselves.

This is why the curriculum writers chose are a problem- I agree we need more diversity but it’s about their attitude towards English education too. The link between learning to perform and about performance, language and expression or thought has been eroded over 10 years.

Certainly, packing even more into 'traditional' subjects isn't going to help. Children need knowledge-rich teaching specifically about the media, modes of communication, how information is mediated, the technologies and institutions involved & the power structures involved. And I don't mean...

I remember tweeting years ago, when the term was suddenly all the rage, that no school could possibly lay claim to "knowledge-richness" if it ignored (or even sneered at) media education. The Govian, selective evisceration of the English curriculum didn't help.

6/8 All of this happens when we share books and talk about them with children. We need children to have opportunities to misunderstand, and then to discuss this with them. We need to provide texts that are curious, fascinating, unusual. We need to ensure they know how texts and words work.

These habits are what the Hackney reading programme/ reciprocal reading was based on (also small group) its the strategy I have found works enormously well. It’s fallen out of fashion which is a shame- small groups of readers trained in good teading skills vs a ‘knowledge’ approach….
