had some thoughts this morning [ #adrien #angelique #junowrites ]

"aye, cap'n," a gruff deckhand tuts his chin out to the storage crates. "we got a stowaway."

an amused little smile pulls at angelique's lips. this wasn't the first time she'd caught a straggler on her ship, and it wouldn't be the last. if anything, this one was lucky they hadn't left for the skies just yet.

"oh? let me see 'em."

the deckhand steps aside, gesturing for angelique to come forward. she peers curiously to a little nook tucked between a handful of larger crates, and sees their stowaway: a trembling viera child with wide, terrified lavender eyes. a kinky mop of snow-tipped black curls fall over their face. the child couldn't have been any older than ten, maybe eleven summers. they clutch a knife to their chest—angelique recognizes it, the tricksy child must've swiped it off one of the crew-and point it out towards her.

angelique pulls her hat off and kneels before the child, who points the knife out further in response. now up close, she can better see how small they are, little more than skin and bones.

"hey, now. i'm not here to hurt you." the knife isn't retracted, and she tilts her head with a wry smile. feisty little thing. "where are your parents?"

the child shakes their head. their face twists like they're thinking too hard about their words. common isn't their native tongue, it seems.

"... dead." their accent is thick. foreign. angelique isn't able to quite place it; it certainly wasn't dalmascan, not bozjan either. turali was out of the question, and while she wasn't entirely familiar with meracydia, it's unlikely a child this small could've crossed half a star to end up on a floating island in the furthest reaches of the sea of clouds. peculiar. "have been for a long time."

"so you've got no family?"

the child pauses, then shakes their head again.

angelique nods, and purses her lips, "how'd you end up in a place like this, then? fortuna's hardly safe for grown men, let alone a little kid."

"i... don't know."

she gets the feeling that the child would rather not talk about it. "...well, alright. you've got a name, kid?"

silence. what sort of small child ends up stowed away on an airship, with no family to speak of and no idea where they came from, and not so much as a name to give? if their fear wasn't so genuine, angelique might've thought this was some sort of set up.

"'kid' it is, then." she offers the child a hand. "let's get you something to eat, you look damn near starved to death."

the child seems hesitant at first, but a rumbling stomach always wins out in the end. they tuck the knife away into their pocket, and take hold of the hand offered to them, angelique pulls them to their feet with a smile. "there we go. c'mon, now."

"our chef mieht not be the best cook around. but it's certainlv better than nothing."
