If long dependencies are cognitively costly @rferrericancho.bsky.social, why are SOV languages so widespread? In a new #Glottometrics paper, I argue that once you count the arguments actually used, long dependencies are far less problematic. Takeaway: don’t trust SOV/SVO labels—look at real usage!

Really looking forward to the Academia Europaea Conference this week. It's a great chance to connect, share ideas, and build bridges across disciplines. These are challenging times for science: funding cuts, public distrust, AI disruption... It's more important than ever to stand together.
This week we’re in #Barcelona for our annual conference #BuildingBridges2025! Over the next few days, Members of Academia Europaea will gather to connect, exchange ideas, and take part in a diverse programme featuring distinguished MAEs who will share insights and perspectives across disciplines.
As I show in my new preprint, #Bayesian statistics is no longer just a niche tool. It’s becoming mainstream in linguistics research. A survey of journal articles shows a rapid rise in Bayesian regression over the past five years. Why? #Bayes #Statistics #Linguistics doi.org/10.48550/arX...

Paper in @pnas.org shows 'industrial scale' academic fraud: Fake papers are not rare & are generally not detected (only ~25% get retracted). Facilitated by 'brokers' - "22 editors accept articles that were retracted significantly more frequently than one would expect by chance".

I think we should stop using the label "null results". It's a misnomer that devalues the importance of research findings. Research is a competition of hypotheses. Any outcome of this competition advances science, no matter how strongly attached we are to our own theories. 1/3
Scientists overwhelmingly recognize the value of sharing null results, but rarely publish them in the research literature go.nature.com/450KElr
