Right, because nobody cares about open heart surgery until they need it themselves. But “we put a man on the moon” is a tidy story about “us” as a nation (or a species) that we get to tell ourselves.
I get it from a narrative perspective. Kitty Hawk to Apollo 11 was 66 years; many people experienced both in their lifetime (and everything between). 66 years from 1969 is 2035 and the triumphs just aren’t as narratively simple.
Like the Covid vaccine was a gobsmacking miracle of modern science and probably the greatest American accomplishment of the 21st century and nobody gives a s—t.
Bleach is a landmark in anime that posed the question "WHAT if the main character had no flaws and was fine and won everything and was really boring and would have introspective dreams during convenient times when he couldn't best somebody?"
My favorite wild fantasy in movies is when someone keeps trying to persuade their shut-in friend to go out. Like...imagine begging an introvert to do stuff. Its exhausting.
