The Uber driver for my ride back to the airport is Liberian and asked what I’d eaten while I was here. He listened then suggested next time I look for a place that serves jollof rice. I’m no Anthony Bourdain, but I’m definitely going to seek this out. Sounds delicious.
I’m in Minneapolis, it’s 70° with no humidity, and I just had a very good Mediterranean dinner outside. I regret nothing. I just wish I could share that with all of you suffering in the heat and humidity back home (like I will be this weekend).
Question for the arborists here on BlueSky… I live near Raleigh NC, and my house backs up to a natural wooded area. How concerned should I be about otherwise healthy looking trees like these here being too close together? (1/)
Just saw Project Hail Mary for the second time. It’s definitely a movie I wish I could see again for the first time, but what I gave up in the thrill of the first viewing I gained in noticing some of the things I missed the first time because I was too wound up.

When you've had the driest start to a year since records began, a forecast like this is enough to bring your local meteorologist, hydrologist, climatologist, farmer, river keeper, and water manager to tears. Will this end the drought? Nope. Would it make a nice dent? You betcha.
If you're planning to tailgate this evening, keep an eye to the sky. Good chance for showers/thunderstorms as we get into the evening hours.

I'm disappointed that the Jankowski goal was disallowed, but it's great that the review opened up everything and they awarded the penalty shot on a foul the refs didn't call the first time through. I don't hate that at all.
Got some more data yesterday on model verification - there is a definitive decreasing trend in global model scores that raises concerns about NWS upper air struggles. But this is a complex scientific problem that needs dedicated experiments to understand what the actual impacts might be.

It's been a wild 24 hours in the Triangle. 4pm yesterday: 89.1°, SW wind gusting to 30 mph 4pm today: 39.9°, N wind gusting to 31 mph A 49.2°F drop, multiple hours of winds 30+ — oh — and a round of very gusty thunderstorms, too (with wind damage reported not far away). Fun day for weather fans.

The first two bowl games today were meh - some excitement but outcome not in doubt for much of the game. The Sugar Bowl, OTOH, is more than making up for any lack of excitement. Well into the 4th quarter and I have no idea who’s going to win.
The atmosphere doing its best to blow 2025 on out of here. Sustained winds 35-40 kts with gusts to 55 kts. Fun!
