Sociologist at LA Tech I study punk stuff and electoral politics. Generally not togther All opinions expressed do not reflect my institution. Nor are they all my own. Some are orders from the worm in RFK Jr.'s brain https://allmylinks.com/nkatz
Zero new NSF grants in sociology, anthropology, political science and economics. The agenda of this US govt is to stop documenting the society in which we live while they are destroying it. We will find other ways to track and explain our times and fight to restore our research funding.
Finally, this has gone a bit under the radar, so I want to highlight it: The social, behavioral and economic sciences directorate (SBE) has simply ceased to deliver grants to many of its subareas. Any topic not specifically OK'd by the Trump administration is receiving zero new awards.
The joy I get from seeing every facebook/Instagram post about the soap girls tour collapsing cannot be understated

While I think we all know the demon hunters/#kpopdemonhunters lawsuit is a publicity stunt and its generally a good idea to go against the corporate overlords... I think it would be REALLY funny if the band lost and was forced to change their name
On the one hand it wasn't super helpful for my research. On the other hand I now have a really cool piece of punk history
The reason I feel so drained today is because every time we pass a Mike Johnson sign on the road a little bit more of my life force is drained away
A decade ago, Facebook was so worried about rising misinformation that it paid various news outlets to hire writers specifically tasked with publishing Snopes-like fact-checks. Today, the company is leaping into bed with a purveyor of misinformation to toy with a tool known for getting facts wrong.
Does anyone else feel like they are getting an influx of emails from predatory publishers? I'm used to getting a wave after I get a new article out but over the last few months it seems like I have been getting 4-5 a day #Sociology #academicsky #pleasemakeitstop
Co-signing here and I wish just *one* of these articles would point out the history of authoritarian regimes attacking sociology specifically because it makes authoritarians uncomfortable.
Sociology is amazing. Our biggest problem is bad-faith actors who maliciously spurn the field because we teach people how societies work and they'd rather we all stay in the dark. Not today, Satan!
Could Excel be conscious? We surveyed more than Jan 1 1900 people to find out.
Booing Donald Trump is the closest thing to a national anthem for the world.
Lindsey Graham died the way he lived, as a minor distraction from Mitch McConnell
For years when going over comparative/historical methods with my students I've talked about how the biggest perk of the approach is that the dead don't talk
To be a historian is to speak ill of the dead and the rest of you should take more history classes and join us.
I'm not even religious and even I know that Trump is the antichrist.
Yes, I did grab this @verucasaltband.bsky.social on discogs because of x-men 97. Since it needed padding they sent this double album too. Amazing. If only my power wasn't out so I could listen
Mitch McConnell is as down as the power line in our front yard after this storm
Despite all the horrors of the day... I've completed the shitty rough draft of the first chapter of my next book!
This just in Supreme Court chooses to amp up party-clientelism and limit political discourse in NRSC v FEC ruling. Expect something written on this by the end of the week
"Across countries & within the US, the same relationship appears: In places of concentrated wealth, individuals’ willingness to help others and engage in volunteerism tends to decrease." Important work by @schechtlm.eurosky.social & colleagues in @contexts.org. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

SCOTUS has evolved from asking if corporations have civil rights to asserting that only corporations have civil rights. Seems bad.
Just yesterday I saw a reel asking "what happened to all the people talking about drinking raw milk?" Apparently they went to Louisiana

In November, Montana voters will vote on a ballot measure that would ban corporations and trade associations from spending money to corruptly influence the state's elections. Hawaii was first and Montana might be next.
Midterm Madness: Have Super PACs Met Their Match?
A plan that would make it illegal for corporations to spend on elections will appear on Montana’s ballot this November.
