Did you know that the Vikings first invaded Ireland in the 8th century, raiding a monastery on Rathlin Island on the north east coast. It is home to three unique lighthouses, including the famous "upside-down" West Lighthouse #WyrdWednesday [📷 Rathlin Island taken by my daughter, August 2026]

Fortnight back home is a lovely way to spend a holiday. In many ways, I’m a different version of myself there. Easy to be more relaxed, conversationally, with strangers. Yet always aware of identity and, thus, also more self-censoring than I would prefer. The strange duality of the place, I guess.

Lived out another of my wee life dreams today by going out to the upside-down lighthouse on Rathlin. Even up close, it looks slightly surreal and more like an art exhibit than an important part of seafaring infrastructure.

A lighthouse. Except there’s a tower and a light at the bottom rather than the other way around.
