Hope is a discipline; a necessary part of any strategy. Hope is a refusal to quit. Even in this season of cruelty and chaos; division, and despair we must remember that we are the defenders of public education. And public education is the heartbeat of democracy.

Yes, it is the 250th anniversary of the country's founding. Especially now, I recommend Ken Burns' The American Revolution, a documentary which includes unheard voices—Native Americans, free and enslaved Black Americans, and more. In watching, I was reminded that our nation is a work in progress.

We demand fully funded schools, affordable housing, and fair tax systems. We demand freedom for our students, freedom for our educators, we demand freedom for all people who call America home. We organize today. We mobilize tomorrow. We vote in November.

The Education & Workforce Committee is considering 10 bills to codify executive orders dismantling the Dept of Education. I know firsthand how the dept makes public education possible & supports the civil right of students every day. I will not support advancing any of these bills out of committee

Students deserve a functional, robust Department of Education with skilled professionals ready to serve them. Destroying the Department of Education is more than a disservice—it will harm students across this country.

Educators are the keepers of dreams. Students are depending on us as educators to teach and support them, and to uphold our public education systsem. And this country is depending on us as advocates to lead the way back from dogmatism to decency and democracy.

All families, including Somali Americans and Muslim community members in Minnesota, deserve to celebrate the achievements of their students without fearing for their safety or that their special moment will be used to stoke division by politicians.
